original title:  Aero Lag when opening and closing windows in Windows 7

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK since we've got the ball rolling here, I am editing this to better reflect what is going on. The below links are just a few out of hundreds of post you will find on the internet about this Aero Lag. Some offer workarounds and some don't. I just Googled Aero Lag and this was from the first page.

If you have the same problem, please provide:

  1. What type of graphics card you have.
  2. What kind of drivers are you using (Win7 preinstalled or manufacturer's drivers)
  3. Was your version of Win7 an update or clean install.
  4. What motherboard you have.

From the sounds of it, Microsoft is looking for a fix.

I also ask for a forum admin to make this a sticky as many people are experiencing this problem.

**Have solved my problem withAeor lag.**Reinstall Windows 7 U64 twice with new/old driver.

Replaced Gforce 8800GTX with Gforce GTX480.

Have spent many days on this problem without a solution.

But here is a very simple solution that works for me.

I removed the USB extension cablefor my CreativeHS-1200WirelessUSB Gaming Headset.

Aero lags when Iused USB extension cable and headset charging.

Without USB extension cable, everything is fine.

So it think itis a voltagedrop in the USB extension cable, causes the system to lag. ?

Hope it can help.

Sincerely,

Dennis Psilander

I say it is not a hardware problem because many people have different types of hardware. One guy had the problem on all 3 of his systems. The statistic might not be completely accurate, nobody can be exactly sure how many people are having the problem, but if you just Google "Windows 7 Aero Lag" you will get plenty of results.

And if MS is always working the problem, then I want to know it. For the past few days here they have completely ignored us and have not even said if they are working on the problem or not. All we ask for is to be kept in the loop, that can't be that hard considering how much money we spent on this OS, now is it?

Thanks for the input. I will try it and see if it works!

Nope. Didn't work. I might try agian cause I think I did it wrong because I only unistall the drivers, not delete them, and when I rebooted Windows auto-reinstalled them.

But something else did just now occur. I was going along my normal rotine and BAM! The screen went black and then came back on a few seconds later, then it was laggy, so here I go again to reboot!

Come on MS, what's the word? Your getting some really pissed off costomers here!

It is important that you use the driver cleaner utility I suggested in safe mode to get rid of the baked in windows/nvidia drivers after you've done the normal uninstall routine, otherwise you're making the same mistake again as windows 7 falls back to these drivers if you uninstall the nvidia issued ones and when you install thgem again they're just trying to install over the top of the baked in ones. Never a good idea with vid drivers. It made mine crashy on the desktop.

A proper clean should result in a low res boot before you reinstall the nvidia issued drivers.

This is why I think it may be triggered by the method one uses to install Win7 and the drivers, as it seems to follow users rather than hardware or software in particular.

I am not trying to minimize your troubles or dismiss them, but ...

    You said:

*"We have determined that the lag is NOT cause by hardware, but is infact caused by Win7"*And by what scientific method did you "determine" this?

Also, you mention "dozens" then "thousands" of people having the same problem.

Statistically, that is not a really significant number and probably won't get you a very direct response from MS.

Actually, from the numbers I see having these issues, I tend to think they are about right for hardware compatibility issues and WAY below the numbers we saw with Vista and even XP before SP1.

The truth is, Microsoft is always "working the problem" on a scale that most people can't even imagine.

    VP Tech Services

I don't see how any driver or hardware problem in the graphics could result in the pause only when opening or closing windows, whereas maximising and minimising is not affected.

No, thousands of users from the millions of installations is a very small percentage. You are forgetting that we are only talking about those that have registered the problem by seeking assistance online and there will be many more users that either do not notice the pause or think it insignificant enough to ignore. The truth is no-one can guess how many users are affected because this sort of thing is only going to be noticed by a small minority; that doesn't mean that this minority should not receive the same level of support as those reporting other small, but more noticeable glitches.

Don't get me wrong here; I loved Vista and love some (though not all) of the changes in Win7 - and I can live with this stuttering window bug. I just have this overriding urge to wade in where I see something that isn't "right". Pasted responses from people labelled "Most Valued" by Microsoft, who more often than not don't even read the questions properly, are rude, demeaning and inadequate. Not coming back and responding to further requests for assistance is a heresy that Microsoft, as a global corporation, appears to have forgotten.

My 65 year old mother can read a crib sheet and copy/paste; perhaps she should apply for a position in MS First-Line Support.

I'm not tarring all support guys with the same brush, believe me, because there are those, like yourself, who can converse and construct their own posts. There are just too many that look for keywords and search the knowledgebase.
