I receive Aero Lag when opening and closing windows in Windows 7

There's various solutions to this issue (directly from the original poster's linked threads) that you should probably try.

1. Disable "Multi Step OC Booster" in BIOS
2. Modify refresh rate of monitor
3. Turn off "Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing" (workaround only, not really a solution)
4. Install Nvidia Vista drivers instead of Windows 7 drivers
5. Modify "PowerMizer" settings in Nvidia Control Panel (Notebooks?)

I think it would also be worthwhile to indicate the following in your replies regarding this issue.

1. What video card and driver you are using
2. What motherboard you have

Also, some people have indicated that the issue goes away when they are playing a video or other graphic intensive task, which boosts the GPU to it's highest performance resulting in the windows opening and closing smoothly.  Do you guys experience the same thing?

Personally I haven't seen this issue but I would love to help investigate.

I don't see how any driver or hardware problem in the graphics could result in the pause only when opening or closing windows, whereas maximising and minimising is not affected.

Well, when you consider that Aero uses hardware acceleration for its effects, and Win7 uses the GPU to accelerate other processing, and Win7 has made changes to the way it stores each window in vram on the graphics card to accelate it, you can see how the vid card and driver are heavily involved here. Add to this the fact that many people seem to find the issue resolved when Aero is switched off, I think the vid card and driver need serious consideration here.

If you don't want to try fixing it then don't, your choice. If you decided to install your vid drivers in the usual manner (ie. cleaning the old drivers first with a cleaner) then you will avoid many issues, as this is a well know cause of vid card issues. This is a simple thing to check out through experimentation, and ought to be your normal vid driver upgrade process anyway whether it helps this time or not.

Also, you mention "dozens" then "thousands" of people having the same problem.

Statistically, that is not a really significant number and probably won't get you a very direct response from MS.

Actually, from the numbers I see having these issues, I tend to think they are about right for hardware compatibility issues and WAY below the numbers we saw with Vista and even XP before SP1.

The truth is, Microsoft is always "working the problem" on a scale that most people can't even imagine.

No, thousands of users from the millions of installations is a very small percentage. You are forgetting that we are only talking about those that have registered the problem by seeking assistance online and there will be many more users that either do not notice the pause or think it insignificant enough to ignore. The truth is no-one can guess how many users are affected because this sort of thing is only going to be noticed by a small minority; that doesn't mean that this minority should not receive the same level of support as those reporting other small, but more noticeable glitches.

Don't get me wrong here; I loved Vista and love some (though not all) of the changes in Win7 - and I can live with this stuttering window bug. I just have this overriding urge to wade in where I see something that isn't "right". Pasted responses from people labelled "Most Valued" by Microsoft, who more often than not don't even read the questions properly, are rude, demeaning and inadequate. Not coming back and responding to further requests for assistance is a heresy that Microsoft, as a global corporation, appears to have forgotten.

My 65 year old mother can read a crib sheet and copy/paste; perhaps she should apply for a position in MS First-Line Support.
