original title:  Aero Lag when opening and closing windows in Windows 7

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK since we've got the ball rolling here, I am editing this to better reflect what is going on. The below links are just a few out of hundreds of post you will find on the internet about this Aero Lag. Some offer workarounds and some don't. I just Googled Aero Lag and this was from the first page.

If you have the same problem, please provide:

  1. What type of graphics card you have.
  2. What kind of drivers are you using (Win7 preinstalled or manufacturer's drivers)
  3. Was your version of Win7 an update or clean install.
  4. What motherboard you have.

From the sounds of it, Microsoft is looking for a fix.

I also ask for a forum admin to make this a sticky as many people are experiencing this problem.

**Have solved my problem withAeor lag.**Reinstall Windows 7 U64 twice with new/old driver.

Replaced Gforce 8800GTX with Gforce GTX480.

Have spent many days on this problem without a solution.

But here is a very simple solution that works for me.

I removed the USB extension cablefor my CreativeHS-1200WirelessUSB Gaming Headset.

Aero lags when Iused USB extension cable and headset charging.

Without USB extension cable, everything is fine.

So it think itis a voltagedrop in the USB extension cable, causes the system to lag. ?

Hope it can help.

Sincerely,

Dennis Psilander

Yeah, I have to agree with ajm here, it is lag. I wrote my response here:

After examining the issue further, it only occurs when opening a window or closing a window (opening a folder on your desktop, for example).  It does not occur when minimizing or maximizing.

    It is not lag.

It looks like they wanted the window animation to "pop."  It basically opens, and right before it is completely open, the animation sequence changes its time-step.

Not a bug, not a glitch, not lag.  They clearly meant to do it.

I don't know what the guys at Microsoft were smoking if they meant to make it that way. It's counterproductive. I was doing a recording session last night using Sonar, and editing some notes. This means there are small windows that popup and I have to close them after editing, one after the other.

It actually looks like the windows are FREEZING because that crappy "animation", if that's what you want to call it. You get tired of looking at it after a little while, because it looks like something is wrong. To be perfectly honest, there IS indeed a lag, because opening and closing the windows are SLOWER and not smoother, which leads me to sometimes click the wrong thing because I get confused.

Believe it or not, it is indeed a bug. I feel Microsoft should fix it. And fast.

TOOL, I am not sure if you are talking about everyone or just yourself, but it IS while minimizing and it IS while maximizing. It IS lag/stutter because the frame rate drops considerably. The window is supposed to move in a fluid motion, not choppy.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this discussion.

I have been using Vista x64 for about a year now, and I upgraded to Windows 7 x64 last night.

I had tried out my Windows 7 when using Vista, in a Virtual Machine, just to see if I would like Windows 7, and I thought the "micro-lag" issue was just because I was running in a Virtual Machine.

When I formatted my system drive and installed Windows 7 last night, and started to use it, I noticed the "micro-lag" in the window animations immediately.Vista had no such lag.

    My system specs:

    ASUS P5Q Pro

    Intel Q6600 @ 3.6ghz

    8GB RAM

    ATI 4850

    Latest drivers, etc.

Again, Vista x64 was smooth and perfect.  Windows 7 has "micro-lag" in the window animations.

After examining the issue further, it only occurs when opening a window or closing a window (opening a folder on your desktop, for example).  It does not occur when minimizing or maximizing.
