Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 Answers Forum!

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->

Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

I just bought a Dell Inspiron and had the same issues as described above.  I tried the WMI repository fix and checked drivers.  Could not open the the network and sharing center and got the "one moment please" circle over the wi-fi meter in the tray, which eventually turned to an X.  I could open Firefox and use the net, but couldn't open IE and any gadgets that required internet access failed.  All of this was working at first.

Then I noticed the the Norton Antivirus that shipped with the machine was not working properly.  I tried uninstalling, but it would only hang during the uninstall process.  I finally uninstalled it in safe mode and all the issues resolved.  I then used one of our spare licenses for Trend Micro Internet Security Pro to install that software on this machine and everything is now working fine.  FYI, I was also trying to set up Windows Live so that I could establish parental controls.  Don't know if that was a contributor.

It would be good to hear from some of the MSFT folks if they think this is the main issue or if I just inadvertently fixed some other problem while going through the uninstall/re-install process.

Thanks for posting all these threads.  Even though they didn't give me the answer I needed, they definitely provided some clues and gave me some assurances that I wasn't alone!

I'm having the same problem.  Tried winmgmt /verifyrepository & winmgmt /salvagerepositorybut it did not fix the red x.  I tried uninstalling the LAN & Wireless adapters with no luck.  Any other ideas?   This should be a simple fix.
