Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday. The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it). When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1. Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2. Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3. Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->

Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4. Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

Hello Pearlback,

My Problem was on a Desktop PC and I never had the Service "WLAN Autoconfig" automatically running. Perhaps your hint would also work, I don't know.

The solution which is working properly on my PC was the above documented one.

im sure microsoft had no idea about this, but a lot of people have hacked xbox consoles here

most of us having this problem have wireless connection in house and when we connect our xbox 360 JTAG to pc by using ethernet cable thats when things start **** up.

Im sure there is no solution for "crazy icon" but thats not only problem that comes with it...

im also having problems with internet IP and some other internet settings so every few hours i have to trouble shoot problems, just to connect to my wireless modem.

Basicly what microsoft suggest is not to use JTAG :D

Hi! I have the same problem about the icon that appears "not connected" but it is actually connected to a network. I tried to fix it according to your suggestion but the problem is I cannot find "local users and groups" under system tools. I found only these items:

TASK SCHEDULER

EVENT VIEWER

SHARED FOLDER

PERFORMANCE

My OS is windows 7 premium 64bit.

I had the same problem on my laptop after installing bluetooth software.

it's like the windows considered every network connection as a bluetooth network connection which wasn't connected

I had internet connection but the icon was wrong...

I tried everything but nothing worked , finally I found a solution.

1.go to device manager - right click computer > properties> device manager

2.click + on network and adapters

3.uninstall the following :

bluetooth device (personal area network)

bluetooth device

wireless network connection

and finally your network card

*my laptop runs win 7 and reinstalls all of this drivers automatically by connecting to the internet , you have to make sure you have a cable enabled internet connection before you do that unless you won't be able to reinstall the drivers automatically.

5.restart pc

6.connect to the internet by using an alternative ( like a cable,smartphone with a usb enabled internet connection but NOT WIFI)

let windows reinstall the missing drivers.

PC with Win7/32-bit (with Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller for LAN-Conn., which is not used)

In my case it was nearly similar:

The solution was to uninstall the LAN-Driver, then after the restart the driver was installed automatically and - surprise, surprise ... - the ICON in the tray was correct !!

I hope it'll help other users.

My pc is Win7/64bit

it works for me.. but I suggest not to reboot your pc after you uninstall the driver.

Just DON'T TICKED the "delete driver software in this device" and click OK.

After you uninstall all software under network adapters, go to ACTION>SCAN FOR HARDWARE CHANGES and it automatically installs its missing software.

Connect to internet network and it works!
