Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->  

         Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

 Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

    I too have the exactly same problem. My wireless network is connected and working all well.

    When wireless network is busy connecting, (with blue circle on top of signal bar looking like icon) it seems fine.

    But as soon as it connects, the icon turns into normal network icon with X on it indicating that it is NOT connected. (but it is)

    I have followed your step. but it still does not work.

    My network adaptors are all working fine and don't think it needs to update driver.

    And I must tell you that this only seem to happen recently, not sure what I did, but It was not like that in the beginning.

    This is actually annoying.. please help to fix this problem.

    I am well connected to the internet. (otherwise I won't be able to type this :D )

    but no matter what the network icon shows X on top. (not connected)

    Hover over the mouse over that icon tells me correct internet connection name and says internet access (but icon is wrong)

    I have started having similar problems (on an HP machine that had windows vista and then upgraded to windows 7) when I changed the anti virus software installed a few days ago. The wireless network icon displays as the one with orange spot on it (not connected connections available) even though I am connected to the internet and upon hovering the mouse over the icon the status shows the connection name and internet access. I tried several things including removing anti virus software all together but it doesn't fix the problem. The only thing that works is if I delete the connection and restart the laptop and then connect again. The icon then displays the correct white bars but if I restart the machine as normal; i.e.; without deleting the connection, the problem comes back. I am suspecting a corrupted registry but don't know how to fix this. Any help would be appreciated.

    Create a new user account and check that will fix the issue.

    Tried that but the same problem. Even if I start in safe mode it still shows incorrect icon. As a last resort I had to restore the system to a previous point and that seems to have fixed the problem.
