Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->  

         Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

 Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

    I appologize if this has already been cover here but I just spent a day on this false connectivity issue and ultimately had to allow or trust the following site in my firewall content filter and reboot any computers on the network with the issue:

    I had the same problem go onto control panel network and internet and click network and sharing and on the left click change adapter setting

    then if you have a network bridge disable it and delete it

    OMG OUT OF ALL THE THINGS I TRIED THIS WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM SO HAPPY!!!!

    I had tried to do that before but it messed my wifi up. turns out i had to give it five min for it to go back to normal.

    Although, I won't be able to connect my ps3 to the internet anymore (for some reason it wouldn't pick up the wifi itselft so i had to do a bridge connection to get it to work. I won't be playing online for a while anyways so it's ok. )

    IF YOU HAVE A NETWORK BRIDGE/ BRIDGE CONNECTION I RECOMMEND USING THIS METHOD!!!

    First off I see where Rob C took my snarky answer off but the thread is alive and well....now on to the issue....in my particular case it was downloading the Connectify utility trying to turn my laptop into a wi-fi hotspot that was causing all the issues...even with Connectify not running.... and with it running also.... so by uninstalling it... the red ''X'' over my connection icon in the task bar went back to normal...I have seen more answers to this question all over the internet and all are different but they do address certain areas that MAY be the cause. WindowsSevenForums even has a different take on the fix also.....it pays to look far and wide just to make sure because I have seen where some ideas where detrimental and would cause more issues...(Win7forums) so for me it wasn't the Microsoft updates.... it was me trying to make a hotspot for a friend, so I am chalking it up to a coincidence on the update thing.
