Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 Answers Forum!

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->

Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

    Update:

The Red X went away for just one reboot and then returned shortly thereafter.  I then disabled the wired network adapter connected to the router or tried to.  It actually wouldn't disable, had to end it in Task Manager.  Then rebooted, and started a new internet connection and voila, no more Red X or problem ever since.

I had the issue with the Red X on a 3 month old Windows 7 64-bit installation with perfect network connectivity and the above fix worked first time.  A very annoying problem, but thank you for the fix.

Works now, thanks.  Not sure if the above WMI permissions or the database repair (had to "run as admin..." for the cmd prompt to work) did the trick.    Also, I changed startup type ALL services starting with "Network" to automatic.

I made the mistake of doing both before restarting computer.  Sorry, can't be definitive on the culprit/fix.

Still have the issue where "View network status and tasks" brings up that stupid error.  Can't view network connections, etc.

    Hi,

To resolve this problem, you must scan and repair the WMI Repository Database on the computer. To do this, follow these steps:

Click StartCollapse this imageExpand this image, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

At the command prompt, type the following commands. Pressing ENTER after each command line:

    winmgmt /verifyrepository

    winmgmt /salvagerepository

    Restart the computer.
