Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 Answers Forum!

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->

Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

    Worked for me:

Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> (right-click adapater) -> uninstall

Device Manger -> Action  -> Scan for hardware changes

This reinstalls driver and resets the icon. I didn't need to reboot.

winmgmt /verifyrepository did nothing as therw was no problem.

I had the same problem. The WMI fixes did not help.

I removed the driver for the Wireless Adapter and then reinstalled the driver. That fixed my problem.

I had Local Area Connection and Incoming Connections listed in my installation. I never use Incoming Connections, so I deleted that. I then disabled and re-enabled Local Area Connection. The icon in my taskbar is now missing the dreaded red X for the first time since January. Hoorah!
