Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->  

         Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

 Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

    Same problem here. Was a fresh Windows 7 64 bit, all updates, current drivers. (No Bluetooth, no network bridge, no anti virus software, no personal firewall, only one network connection.) None of the above solutions has changed anything. This has already cost me five hours. Has anybody a real solution for this? Except re-installing completely?

    Hi guys 

    I had the same problem and tried all the mentioned solutions above and to no avail. then i checked my network connections and found that my network bridge that i created to link my wired network to a wifi network was the case of my problem. because the network bridge was using my wifi card and that wired network was not connected i got the red X.

    so if you have set up a network bridge, that may be the problem.

    My computer one beated me in a chess game, but it was not match for me in a kickboxing contest

    I have tried every single fix posted here and elsewhere. Not one has made a difference to this problem, even temporarily. The problem appeared after a Dell technician installed a new Bluetooth adapter driver for me in my XPS 1340. Now, I appear to have an extra Wireless adapter (Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport) and this crazy notification icon error, which is driving me to distraction.

    Although I just disabled my other network cards, but <Link Removed> REALLY WORKS FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!
