Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 Answers Forum!

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->

Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

I experienced the red cross problem as well, and although the solutions published on the forum did not help, they pointed me in the right direction.

Some months ago I configured a wired-wireless network bridge on the computer, then I completely forgot about it. Later the red cross problem appeared after some updated.

Checking the network connections panel, I simply deleted the bridge and the problem was solved

    Hope this may help someone.

This solution worked for me when I was fixing an HDMI audio device not working problem.  I got my audio back and was surprised to see the wireless icon return to normal indication

go to start search and type cmd search will return cmd.exe right click on this and select 'run as administrator' at the prompt type:-

    net localgroup Administrators /add networkservice

    press enter then type:

    net localgroup Administrators /add localservice

    press enter then type:

    exit

press enter and restart your computer
