Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday. The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it). When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1. Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2. Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3. Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->

Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4. Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

If you are on laptop or if you have any wireless lan card then the problem is caused because the service WLAN AutoConfig is not running. Try enabling it and see if it works. Here, the problem seems to be causing by that service. If I disable the service (because I was using alternate connection i.e with datacard/broadband modem/dialup), the icon says red 'x' but the internet was ON. If I enabled it, the monitor icon with plugged in icon appears.

Also if you disable the wireless network card under 'network adapter' (atheros, intel, liteon etc) in device manager, it would bring back the icon when you connect to internet using alternate medium.

When you need the wireless card to use the wifi or for any other purpose, you can renable it.

Windows 7 32 bit.

I had the same problem on my laptop after installing bluetooth software.

it's like the windows considered every network connection as a bluetooth network connection which wasn't connected

I had internet connection but the icon was wrong...

I tried everything but nothing worked , finally I found a solution.

1.go to device manager - right click computer > properties> device manager

2.click + on network and adapters

3.uninstall the following :

bluetooth device (personal area network)

bluetooth device

wireless network connection

and finally your network card

*my laptop runs win 7 and reinstalls all of this drivers automatically by connecting to the internet , you have to make sure you have a cable enabled internet connection before you do that unless you won't be able to reinstall the drivers automatically.

5.restart pc

6.connect to the internet by using an alternative ( like a cable,smartphone with a usb enabled internet connection but NOT WIFI)

let windows reinstall the missing drivers.

PC with Win7/32-bit (with Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller for LAN-Conn., which is not used)

In my case it was nearly similar:

The solution was to uninstall the LAN-Driver, then after the restart the driver was installed automatically and - surprise, surprise ... - the ICON in the tray was correct !!

I hope it'll help other users.

Ich musste den LAN-Treiber deinstallieren (NICHT löschen anhacken !!) und nach einem Restart war - Überraschung ;:) - dann alles OK mit dem ICON für mein WLAN !!!

I realize that this post was started a long time ago ~ but it appears that folks are still posting to it. I came across it since I suddenly had a red x over my network icon as well (but I am running windows Vista Home Premium) and have not done any upgrades and some of the posts do not apply to my situation.

Anyway, since I did already still have an internet connection and was worried about messing with the registry or going to device manager and clicking on the network connection > uninstalling and then clicking to have it scan for hardware changes - only to completely loose my internet connection I did a bit more research.

In the services.msc section all of my settings are set to automatic so that was not the issue (and I had a connection about an hour earlier and the icon was just fine)

I don't know if this fix will work for anyone else but after seeing a post by gk2010 regarding steps to cleanup the past notifications icon (even though I did not do a bios update) I remembered that there is a link for having it clear up those items --- without having to mess with the registry or the steps given in that persons post.

If you check out the post at http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/102221-45-system-tray-past-items-removal there is a link for an automated edit which I just so happen to have already downloaded and I ran that and my problem was resolved. Yes.... it states for xp but it also works for Vista so perhaps it will also work for windows 7 too

It is a VBScript file that I just clicked on and problem solved. I used the link for the automated edit listed below but there are a few others that may be of help to someone else.

In my case, it was IPv6.

Problem occurred after changing router. What I found out was, my router was supporting IPv6 and my Ethernet adapater had IPv6 enabled (it is enabled by default in Windows 7).

IPv4 is connected, but IPv6 is showing no internet connection. Thus, network icon was showing red x.
