Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->  

         Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

 Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

    Alternate Solution!!!! I am happy this worked for you but I had no such luck.

    I did however sucessfully correct this issue by going into the device manager in the control panel and deleted every network and bluetooth adapter I had installed in my Win 7 64 Bit machine. I restarted the computer and to my amazment, after the re-install of all adapters was complete, my issue was resolved. If you still have this problem, give it a shot.

    Tried this solution, and got an "access denied" response from cmd.  I am working from an admin account... any ideas?  My coworkers are all on same network, on macs and PC's alike, no problems, but I get the red "x" and zero connectivity - getting errors related to my IP address, but it's set to automatically retrieve IP.  Very strange...

    Go to network and sharing center, then to change adapter settings. Once there look for a connection that is set up but not used and delete it. I had a virus set up an "incoming connections". I deleted this and the icon was back to normal. Good luck.
