Canon MP Navigator Stopped working with scanner. Worked under Vista, not Win 7.

Canon scanner Lide 200 worked fine in Vista 64. I upgraded to Win 7 64 and the interface software stopped working - "MP Navigator EX has stopped working". It is a BEX error, Fault module MSONSEXT.DLL_unloaded. I uninstalled, downloaded the newest and reinstalled, same problem. Canon had me create a new profile, program works in that profile. Canon says it is a rights or OS issue.

The scanner works with other software. MP Navigator is a resident program to do copies or copy and email, etc.

I have had the same problem with Win 7 64. I spoke to Canon Tech Support and after an hour during which we tested various things I was told the the problem was with Windows and I should contact Microsoft. I tried creating a new profile which fixed the problem for about a week, then it came back again! The issue may be associated with Windows Update but I am not sure. On this last go around I created a new profile, then copied in the folders and files from the corrupted profile one at a time to see when the problem would start again. After carefully copying files, backing up, testing Mp Navigator, and if necessary restoring the last good setup I discoved that the following file was causing the problem:

C:\Users<user name>\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts\My Web Sites on MSN

Note: This file was not present in my new profile. Also, the icon has the shortcut marker on it, but explorer says it is a folder. There is no file extension.

I eventually copied ALL of the other data from the bad profile to the new one and MP Navigator still worked! I then deleted the offending file from the bad profile and MP Navigator started working there too!

I then reconfigured all of my software and started IE etc. for the first time while watching the Network Shortcuts folder. The offending file has not reappeared yet. I made a shortcut to this location so I can keep an eye on it to see when it appears again.

Hopefully someone at CANON or Microsoft will fix this "corrupted" profile issue.

The issue could be related to a corrupt user profile, since you’ve stated in your post that the program works fine in the other profile you’ve created.

I would love to send the file to you but I am not sure how. I tried a few experiments and in each case the "My Web Sites on MSN" file turns into a normal folder with two files inside. I tried to Zip the file (for e-mailing) and also tired to FTP it to another web site. In both cases the file became a folder. The folder contains the following two objects: desktop.ini and target.lnk. Note, I also tried to copy the file into an e-mail but Outlook wouldn't let me attach it. Here is some info on the contents of the "folder"...

The file called desktop.ini contains the following text:

[.ShellClassInfo]

CLSID2={0AFACED1-E828-11D1-9187-B532F1E9575D}

Flags=2

The shotcut named target.lnk dosen't seem to point anywhere. When I look at the properties of the link there is nothing in the link properties (i.e. Target or Start In).

I finally tried to copy the "My Web Sites on MSN" file to a USB thumbdrive and it didn't change. I could copy the file to a CD and mail it to you if you send me your address. Since the file survived the trip to and from the thumb drive you should get a intact copy.

It is interesting how just the presence of the file on the C drive causes issues with MP Navigator. How does MP Navigator interact with the MSN file, or the MSN file affects the OS? Weird!

David, thank you for this - worked a treat - I've been pulling my hair out since last year with no joy.

I did speak with Canon, and the operator told me they knew about the conflict, they have a problem in propagating info such as this; its the luck of the draw who you speak with. Doesn't fill one with a whole lot of confidence - but then what manufacturer does provide good support for their products on the cutting edge?

I have bought a canon MP640. I use windows XP pro. I can't open canon MP navigator 3.0. Windows says: navigator isn't install well. I have installed all several times. But nothing helpt me. I can't find the file MY Web sites on MSN. What is in XP the solution? I really don't know!
