Canon MP Navigator Stopped working with scanner. Worked under Vista, not Win 7.

Canon scanner Lide 200 worked fine in Vista 64.  I upgraded to Win 7 64 and the interface software stopped working - "MP Navigator EX has stopped working".  It is a BEX error, Fault module MSONSEXT.DLL_unloaded.  I uninstalled, downloaded the newest and reinstalled, same problem.  Canon had me create a new profile, program works in that profile.  Canon says it is a rights or OS issue. 

The scanner works with other software.  MP Navigator is a resident program to do copies or copy and email, etc.

I have had the same problem with Win 7 64. I spoke to Canon Tech Support and after an hour during which we tested various things I was told the the problem was with Windows and I should contact Microsoft. I tried creating a new profile which fixed the problem for about a week, then it came back again! The issue may be associated with Windows Update but I am not sure. On this last go around I created a new profile, then copied in the folders and files from the corrupted profile one at a time to see when the problem would start again. After carefully copying files, backing up, testing Mp Navigator, and if necessary restoring the last good setup I discoved that the following file was causing the problem:

C:\Users<user name>\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts\My Web Sites on MSN

Note: This file was not present in my new profile. Also, the icon has the shortcut marker on it, but explorer says it is a folder. There is no file extension.

I eventually copied ALL of the other data from the bad profile to the new one and MP Navigator still worked! I then deleted the offending file from the bad profile and MP Navigator started working there too!

I then reconfigured all of my software and started IE etc. for the first time while watching the Network Shortcuts folder. The offending file has not reappeared yet. I made a shortcut to this location so I can keep an eye on it to see when it appears again.

Hopefully someone at CANON or Microsoft will fix this "corrupted" profile issue.

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

The issue could be related to a corrupt user profile, since you’ve stated in your post that the program works fine in the other profile you’ve created.

    SOLUTION!!!  EASY FIX!!!

    I have WIN7 64, and I have had to create a new user profile to get MP Navigator to work...  And then it quit working again.  I was not happy.  I found the cause.  You only have to delete the following MSN shortcut file:  "C:\Users\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts\My Web Sites on MSN".  I thought this was a joke, but IT WORKED!!!I want to give credit to the MAN that came up with the fix.  Here is the web page:  "http://computerhelpzone.blogspot.com/2010/08/canon-mp-navigator-software-has-stopped.html"EASY EASY FIX!!!

    Hi Joe,

    I think you have the solution for at least some of the posters in this thread and did not even realize it.

    I was getting frustrated, because I've been searching everywhere on the Web to find a solution with no success. I tried David's solution of first creating a new user profile.  I was not able to get the MP Navigator to work under the new user profile.  So, it was quite clear that the problem I was having was not a profile issue. 

    I also had no entries whatsoever under "C:\Users<user name>\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts" such as "My Web Sites on MSN". And yes, I did have explorer set to show hidden files. I'm happy that David's solution at least worked for some people.

    So I stumbled upon your comment "Then the guy said go to the TWAIN_32 folder and remove anything that is not a Canon folder or the file wiatwain.ds".

    I tried this and it worked for me.

    Here is what I did:

    Go to "C:\Windows\twain_32"

    Cut and Paste:

    Cut all files except the following: Canon files and folders, wiatwain.ds (In my case I was left with two folders: MX870 series, MX870 series_001E8FEE33BF, and one file: wiatwain.ds)

    Paste all files except the Canon files and folders, wiatwain.ds, into a temporary directory

    Now try MP Navigator. If it works, then it appears that the Canon twain drivers are conflicting with the other drivers in the Twain_32 folder.

    You can now paste the other files one-at-a-time back into the Twain_32 folder each time checking to see if MP Navigator is still working.  The moment it stops working, you know what file was causing the conflict.  In my case, it was a file "SilverFast (UScan-SE).ds" which is a file from SilverFast scanning software I had installed on my computer.

    I hope this helps some of you!

    Thanks! I tried all the other suggestions for my MP560 which I was previously very happy with and then wanted to throw out of the window - run as administrator, different ID, delete the network shortcuts (they were empty), finally this worked!! Oh thanks goodness it was driving my crazy.

    Actually, I'm JMackeral as well (I could not for the life of me re-login again as JMackeral so I had to create a new acct!).

    Anyway, I understand if you perhaps aren't familiar with this. I don't look at it as dumbing it down but rather "explaining" to someone who hasn't worked with this stuff yet : )

    1. DBLClick My Computer,  C drive (I asssume!), Windows.
    2. Look for the Twain32 folder. Click once to just select it (don't open it!)
    3. Now Right-Click on the folder and HOLD...and drag the cursor out to your desktop.
    4. Release right button and select "Create shortcuts here". Using the shortcut will immediately put you in the twain folder.

    Now prior to installing my wife's Smart Board, there was just one Twain driver or file in there. It was called "wiatwain.ds". But her SmartBoard installation put two additional files in there called "sdc330Twain.ds" and "SMARTDocCamera.ds" . 

    I then installed the Canon Scanner and it did NOT LIKE these twon files being in there. I would get the "MP Navigator has stopped working".  So after creating the shortcut, I.....

    1. Created a new folder on my desktop (right click, "new" and then "folder").
    2. I renamed this something like "ScanTemp".
    3. I double-clicked my Twain folder shortcut created above and selected/highlighted BOTH new files put in there by the Smartboard installation.
    4. I did a RIGHT click and hold on them and I dragged them into the newly created Scan Temp folder. When I released the right button, I chose MOVE (not copy). So all that was left in \Twain32 was the lone initial file called "wiatwain.ds".   .......wiatwain...why not a bus?  (sorry, couldn't resist : )

    Now when I ran the Canon scanner software, it worked flawlessly. However, I then tried to run an Office app, like MS Word, Excel, etc. and it would immediately bring up an installation box and basically, it would put those 2 moved Smartboard files back into the Twain32 folder on its own! I guess Smartboard and office were linked somehow.

    So the bottom line was when I wanted to scan with Canon, I'd click the Twain shortcut, highlight the files, move them into my temp folder, Scan everything I needed to, then click the shortcut to go back into the Twain file and move the two Smartboard files back.  Then, Word, Excel loaded with no issues.
