Canon MP Navigator Stopped working with scanner. Worked under Vista, not Win 7.

Canon scanner Lide 200 worked fine in Vista 64.  I upgraded to Win 7 64 and the interface software stopped working - "MP Navigator EX has stopped working".  It is a BEX error, Fault module MSONSEXT.DLL_unloaded.  I uninstalled, downloaded the newest and reinstalled, same problem.  Canon had me create a new profile, program works in that profile.  Canon says it is a rights or OS issue.

The scanner works with other software.  MP Navigator is a resident program to do copies or copy and email, etc.

Here is the detail from the windows error

I have had the same problem with Win 7 64. I spoke to Canon Tech Support and after an hour during which we tested various things I was told the the problem was with Windows and I should contact Microsoft. I tried creating a new profile which fixed the problem for about a week, then it came back again! The issue may be associated with Windows Update but I am not sure. On this last go around I created a new profile, then copied in the folders and files from the corrupted profile one at a time to see when the problem would start again. After carefully copying files, backing up, testing Mp Navigator, and if necessary restoring the last good setup I discoved that the following file was causing the problem:

C:\Users<user name>\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts\My Web Sites on MSN

Note: This file was not present in my new profile. Also, the icon has the shortcut marker on it, but explorer says it is a folder. There is no file extension.

I eventually copied ALL of the other data from the bad profile to the new one and MP Navigator still worked! I then deleted the offending file from the bad profile and MP Navigator started working there too!

I then reconfigured all of my software and started IE etc. for the first time while watching the Network Shortcuts folder. The offending file has not reappeared yet. I made a shortcut to this location so I can keep an eye on it to see when it appears again.

Hopefully someone at CANON or Microsoft will fix this "corrupted" profile issue.

Sincerely,

David Witteried

Hey GregDaro,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

The issue could be related to a corrupt user profile, since you’ve stated in your post that the program works fine in the other profile you’ve created.

Refer the link below for more details on fixing a corrupt user profile:

Hope this helps!

    Hi David

You are welcome, It feels so good to be able to contribute for a change instead of taking all the time (from what is available online in the forms of forums and other solution portals.

    Kind regards

I don't know if you are still monitoring this thread, but wanted to say, 'Thanks David!"

On or about Dec. 8, 2011, this identical issue struck down the function of MP Navigator installed on my father's DELL Inspiron 530, up-to-date Windows 7 OS, with attached CANON MP480 printer. The utility had been working flawlessly for several years after intially being installed on the 530's original Windows Vista OS. MP Navigator worked throughout an upgrade to Windows 7 and subsequent Service Pack upgrades.

From about Dec. 12th to about Dec. 24th I tried to locate the issue with MP Navigator... error message something to the effect  "MP Navigator has stopped working" blah blah blah...   I thoroughly uninstalled the entire CANON driver/utilities package using the "REVO Uninstaller" which removes virtually all traces of a program from both the Registry and the HDD. I reinstalled using the original programs disc supplied by CANON with the printer. No joy.

I downloaded each individual part of the updated drivers/utilities package from the CANON Support web site and repeated the thorough uninstall/reinstall process. No joy. I repeated the process just to make sure I hadn't made some sort of error. MP Navigator still wouldn't run.

Finally, on about Dec. 24th a GOOGLE search led me to this thread and your message. Thank you for all the time/effort you put into creating a new profile and tracing down the issue to that mysterious "My Web Sites on MSN" folder (or whatever it is) in the User's "Network Shortcuts" folder. Deleting that 'thing' from my father's HDD 'magically' restored the function of MP Navigator.

Another odd footnote to this issue is that I own virtually the same DELL Inspiron 530 computer with a slightly different CANON MP170 attached... the driver/utilities package is similar if not identical. I have yet to encounter this issue with MP Navigator on my setup. I looked for the "My Web Sites on MSN" troublemaker but it wasn't found on my HDD.

    Thanks again, David.

    I experienced the same problem.

After struggling with profile updates and transfers, I remembered "system restore"

    Restored to the previous day.

    Problem fixed.

    Simple!
