I have been unable to get Age of Empires II to work on my laptop - first with Vista and now with Windows 7.
It installs OK and when you go to launch it the small graphic launch box comes up, then the screen goes phsychedelic before reverting back to normal and nothing more happens.
It is a Compaq Presario with a Mobile Intel R45 chipset.
Any advice?

If you were not able to get the game to run in this same PC with Vista or Windows 7, then it appears that there is a hardware conflict with this game. I see that this game was for older systems and only supports 800x600 graphics. You may want to turn your desktop resolution down to 800x600 with 256 colors, then launch the game. If this doesn't help then you may want to install DirectX 9 and see if that helps.
Do you mean the colors are strange and out of order? Are they in a rainbow pattern? Try ending the process using Task Manager: "explorer.exe". When you quit the game, don't be alarmed about your desktop. Simply create a new process and call it "explorer.exe", and your computer will return to normal.
I know this thread is years old, but what I did to fix this problem was so simple. I had comodo internet security, I tried everything to get this game running. I uninstalled comodo and bam, AOE 2 started working right off the bat. If there is still anyone having this problem, I suggest uninstalling your anti-virus. Disabling comodo did not work, only uninstalling it did.
I also forgot to mention that the trail version plays with no problem on the same computer. I even had the graphics issues mentioned in this thread referring to the purple water and red grass. But as soon as I install the software from the CD and start the game, I get the results that I mentioned in my last post.

I am having trouble even getting the game to start. After clicking on the Icon, I get the "Loading" screen for about 30 - 40 seconds and then I get two error messages. The first states that the "Age of Empires II has stopped working" and goes on to say that it is searching for a solution to the problem. This message only lasts for about 10 seconds before giving way to the second message that states: "Age of Empires II has stopped working- A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I am running Windows Vista. I have tried the DirectX9 install, the -w estension, the compability modes, the resolution/256 color setting and a host of other suggestions. I just want to play the game! Any suggestions that I am missing?!
