I purchased a new HP Envy 15 which had Windows 7 installed in it. Aero was activated. A few days later, Aero has been somehow disabled and I can't activate it again. I used the Troubleshooting utility in Windows 7 for Aero -- it says that nothing is wrong. I also tried un-checking and checking the various options in the visual effects menu.
Can somebody please help me? I'm not sure when or how Aero was disabled; the computer did crash and went blank once, and I had to reboot. I'm not sure if that disabled Aero.

Actually, I just found another thread on the HP website ( http://www.thenextbench.com/t5/HP-Envy-Notebooks/seems-that-all-my-Envy-15-problems-are-not-unique/m-p/50174 ) that reveals that the Aero problems on the Envy 15 are a commmon situation.
The suggested solution is uninstalling stardock.
I uninstalled Stardock and my Aero problem was instantlly fixed
. . . and HP tech support wanted me to do a System recovery/system restore--good grief!!
This is working, but after restart again lost aero vision and again you must past all procedure.
I purposely disabled Aero, but after reading some informative posts and finding that most functionality in Aero uses graphics card instead of CPU, it was better off enabled. Doesn't sound like the same issue reported, but to re-enable it, I used the following:
1. Windows + R key to launch Run dialogue window.
2. Type in "services.msc", then click ok.
3. Locate "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager".
4. There should be a column for Status, indicating if the service is running. Mine displayed no value indicating service was not started and Startup type was set to "disabled".
For me, I needed to:
a) Right click the "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" and select Properties.
b) Change "Startup Type" to Automatic.
c) Click the Start button under Service Status.
This kicked in straight away.

Heh, I've been using two monitors simultaneously for some time now, and since it all started sometimes NVidia Control Panel did very weird and unexpected things with those monitor's resolutions especially when I wanted to use only one of the monitors and then switched to extended desktop (two monitors in use), etc.. Now I see NV Control Panel can even change your monitor display mode from 32 to 16 bit without your knowledge. Eh! congratulations NVidia! Your last products and software can be very surprising. Whatever... **after changing from 16-bit display settings to 32-bit Aero just showed up at once.**J_P_B, your solution turned out to be exactly what I needed. Thanks for sharing.
