Windows 7 Aero Disabled - How can I enable it again?

I purchased a new HP Envy 15 which had Windows 7 installed in it.  Aero was activated.  A few days later, Aero has been somehow disabled and I can't activate it again.  I used the Troubleshooting utility in Windows 7 for Aero -- it says that nothing is wrong.  I also tried un-checking and checking the various options in the visual effects menu.  

Can somebody please help me?  I'm not sure when or how Aero was disabled; the computer did crash and went blank once, and I had to reboot.  I'm not sure if that disabled Aero.

Actually, I just found another thread on the HP website (  http://www.thenextbench.com/t5/HP-Envy-Notebooks/seems-that-all-my-Envy-15-problems-are-not-unique/m-p/50174 ) that reveals that the Aero problems on the Envy 15 are a commmon situation.

The suggested solution is uninstalling stardock.

I uninstalled Stardock and my Aero problem was instantlly fixed

. . . and HP tech support wanted me to do a System recovery/system restore--good grief!!

    One thing to check is make sure the computer has a "system rating".  (Perhaps this got corrupted when the crash that  you mentioned happened...) Go to your system control panel and if there is no rating then have it re-evaluate the system's Windows Experience Index.  Aero won't work if the value isn't established, or isn't hgh enough.

    This is an old thread but thank you TechRon, even today, this method is not considered outdated and has fixed my screen tearing issue. Always remember to do a ratings test after a new win o/s install, folks!

    I had the same problem and it caused me endless headache trying to resolve the issue.

    I noticed the background looked nasty, so I checked my screen resolution. It had changed to 16 bit display - no idea why - so I changed it back to 32 bit quality.

    Problem solved - windows aero was back.
