I purchased a new HP Envy 15 which had Windows 7 installed in it. Aero was activated. A few days later, Aero has been somehow disabled and I can't activate it again. I used the Troubleshooting utility in Windows 7 for Aero -- it says that nothing is wrong. I also tried un-checking and checking the various options in the visual effects menu.
Can somebody please help me? I'm not sure when or how Aero was disabled; the computer did crash and went blank once, and I had to reboot. I'm not sure if that disabled Aero.

Actually, I just found another thread on the HP website ( http://www.thenextbench.com/t5/HP-Envy-Notebooks/seems-that-all-my-Envy-15-problems-are-not-unique/m-p/50174 ) that reveals that the Aero problems on the Envy 15 are a commmon situation.
The suggested solution is uninstalling stardock.
I uninstalled Stardock and my Aero problem was instantlly fixed
. . . and HP tech support wanted me to do a System recovery/system restore--good grief!!
windows 7 are disabled how can I activate it again?
I discovered in my case that the issue was with the display settings being set to 16-bit instead of 32-bit. Very simple to change (no registry hacks, etc.):
Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display\Screen Resolution\Advanced settings\Monitor > choose 32-bit.

This really helped. I was struggling for a few years with this (well not continuously, I just got lazy andused to non aero!!) - I had tried many other options and removed fences and done the "registry > net stop start" thing and everything but the problem was that I have 3 montiors -
both the main montiors I use were on 32 bit, but the nasty little extra monitor I use was set to 16 bit and because the quality of it is so bad anyway I never noticed. That was enough to stop Aero for the whole setup.

This is a very simple task,if your not sure if Aero is enabled,go to Action Center,click on troubleshooting,in the list you will see Appearance and Personalization,under that heading click on Run Display Aero Desktop Effects,problem solved.
