Whenever I right click on a file in Windows Explorer I get a message that Windows Explorer has stopped working and then it shuts downto the desktop. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Gateway GT5228. It has 2 GB of ram and 140GB unused on the hard drive. I have been running Vista for about a year and the problem just started about a week ago. I hope somebody has a suggestion because at the moment I can't delete or rename anything. I have run an antivirus and antispyware programs and have found nothing. Any ideas will be greatly appreaciated.

Right-click crashes are caused by third-party shell extensions. You may use the excellent ShellExView tool to isolate the problem. For more information, see "Method 2" in article Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers.

this is not quite true.
my windows 10 crashed almost everytime i tried to right click in a folder for context menu!
it's pretty shameful.
many windows folk tend to blame 3rd party items, which is NOT on as any other operating system can generally handle such, so what is so special about windows? do they prefer to make sure that 3rd party itiems fail?
i use classic shell, buit do not get any more buggy issues than i had BEFOIRE i employed it.
so you need to find a better answer to this as the problem is with windows, NOT the 3rd party items. in fact again, if the 3rd party itiems continue to, if as you suggest contribute to this, thenj again, shame on windows for not dealing with it.
computers are tools for the people, not fore windows own self serving.
so, again, why would such a simple task as right click for context menue within a folder be so difficult for special-case windows when ubuntu, linux, mac, and others have no issues with this at all.
we find similar issues that windows seems to not be able to handle and always blame on others.
things that other operating systems seem to handle really easily like searching within your system.
in ubuntu or mac when i search for an item within my computer it never takes very long.
in fact i can safely say with all confidence that i can search the whole world via the internet and download an item MUCH faster than windows can search for the sme thing inside my computer.
very very shoddy.
so many issues that make windows ever fall short from being safe to do serious work on.
even my friend who design software for windows don't even use or trust windows to design it with!
so, plea\se, before you reply with technical "advice" please have the actual advice or just tell the truth that you don't know, or it is a fault with windows..

Same here. Tried a number of suggestions with no luck. Uninstalled Spybot and the problem was gone!

I've had the same problem with my Windows 10 tablet and tried the ShellExVIew approach, but even when I disable all the 3rd party extensions, still having the same problem with the context menu. Any suggestions as to how to fix this?
