Wireless Xbox 360 Controller Receiver For Windows Not Detecting/Working

I purchased the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Receiver For Windows and it is not working. I am running Windows 7 64-bit on a Sony Vaio VGN-NW225F laptop. I navigated to the correct place on Microsoft's website and downloaded the appropriate Windows 7 64-bit software for my receiver. It was an exe file and it installed correctly, or at least it said it did. This leads me to believe it is software and not an actual driver, because when I plug my receiver in, it lights up but comes up as "Installing device driver software..." then it says "Installation failed..." and registers the device as an unknown device.

I still press the button to sync it, and then I press the sync button on my controller, my controller recognizes the receiver and connects to it (both devices stop trying to sync) but as the receiver is not recognized by my computer, it is not communicating that a controller is connected.

This is frustrating because there is no documentation for honest support. Going to the support page it lists several things "Windows, Hardware, Audio" etc, but under NONE of these categories is this product, leading me to believe Microsoft simply doesn't give a ____ about me or my problem. Then when I go to support and try and type in my PID (product identification number) it says there is a problem with the number.

i had the exact same problem, i even bought a new controller to no avail. i eventually found the solutionon another forum and now even my old controllers work. after two weeks of searching i can finally breath a sigh of relief.

Right click on Computer

Go to Properties

Click on Device Manager

Right click on the Unidentified Device

Go to Properties

Go to the Drive tab

Click on Update Driver…

Browse my computer for driver software

Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Windows Common Controller for Window Class

Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]

Update Driver Warning

Click Yes

    Yeah same here, can someone help? it still wont connect to my controller after i've installed the correct drivers. I know the controller works as I used it with my xbox today. Spent so long trying to sort this out but nobody seems to reply if people say it doesnt work after the drivers have been installed, just hundreds of people saying thanks...

    Before we start you must have the following:

    • A PC running Windows 7 or 8
    • A Xbox Wireless Receiver
    • A Wireless Xbox 360 Controller

    Now do the following.....

    1. Plug in the Xbox Wireless Receiver.
    2. Go to Control Panel.
    3. Navigate to Device Manager (you can search it from top right corner).
    4. Find the unidentified device which should appear under "Other Devices". (it should have a yellow exclamation mark over it).
    5. Right click on the device and select 'Update Driver Software'.
    6. At the next screen select 'Browse my computer for driver software'.
    7. On the next screen select 'Let me pick from a list of device on my computer'.
    8. Scroll down to bottom where you should find "Xbox 360 Peripherals", select it and click 'Continue'.
    9. Now you should see at least 3 drivers in the list but just scroll to "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: x.x.x..... " making sure you select the most recent driver and than click 'Next'.
    10. The driver should now install. Once it is finished you will probably have to sync the controller by holding in the sync button near the charging port of the controller (hold for about 2-3 seconds until the Xbox light starts rotating) and then push the sync button on the Wireless Receiver. When they sync both lights on the controller and the receiver should stop rotating.

    for those having problems installing this driver on Windows 7 SP1:

    following the steps that have been posted over an over might not work as when you get to the point where you click to manually select the driver there won't be any option slightly related to "Controllers".

    clicking on "have disk" and pointing directly to the .inf file won't workeither!

    the only way I managed to get it installed was going into GPEDIT.MSC and disabling a very important setting.

    GPEDIT.MSC

    >> User Configuration

    >> Administrative Templates

    >> System

    >> Driver Installation

    double-click on Code signing for device drivers and select Disable.

    restart the computer and you will see the controller / receiver will have installed itself.

    now can someone please tell me why do I have to disable driver signing to install a Microsoft driver under a Microsoft operating system?????????????????????????

    I know this is an old post but i'm hoping someone knows the answer for this, I keep seeing your answer everywhere, manually selecting the Windows Common Controller for Window Class driver but it just doesn't show up. I do have the driver on my computer as it shows up when I connect my plug and play charge kit to my computer, any ideas on why its not showing up?
