Wireless Xbox 360 Controller Receiver For Windows Not Detecting/Working

I purchased the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Receiver For Windows and it is not working. I am running Windows 7 64-bit on a Sony Vaio VGN-NW225F laptop. I navigated to the correct place on Microsoft's website and downloaded the appropriate Windows 7 64-bit software for my receiver. It was an exe file and it installed correctly, or at least it said it did. This leads me to believe it is software and not an actual driver, because when I plug my receiver in, it lights up but comes up as "Installing device driver software..." then it says "Installation failed..." and registers the device as an unknown device.

I still press the button to sync it, and then I press the sync button on my controller, my controller recognizes the receiver and connects to it (both devices stop trying to sync) but as the receiver is not recognized by my computer, it is not communicating that a controller is connected.

This is frustrating because there is no documentation for honest support. Going to the support page it lists several things "Windows, Hardware, Audio" etc, but under NONE of these categories is this product, leading me to believe Microsoft simply doesn't give a ____ about me or my problem. Then when I go to support and try and type in my PID (product identification number) it says there is a problem with the number.

i had the exact same problem, i even bought a new controller to no avail. i eventually found the solutionon another forum and now even my old controllers work. after two weeks of searching i can finally breath a sigh of relief.

Right click on Computer

Go to Properties

Click on Device Manager

Right click on the Unidentified Device

Go to Properties

Go to the Drive tab

Click on Update Driver…

Browse my computer for driver software

Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Windows Common Controller for Window Class

Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]

Update Driver Warning

Click Yes

    This does work, but just some info for anyone who cannot find the " Windows Common Controller for Window Class"

    For me it was listed as Microsoft Common Controller for Window Class instead of Windows.

    So anyone who has Microsoft instead of Windows may scroll down to the end (as it is in alphabetical order) and not find it.

    So yeah, if you cannot find it look for Microsoft Common Controller for Window Class.

    in my case, it doesn't appear the entire list where you can choose "Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class", instead, this shows up 

    can anyone tell me what is wrong? im sorry for my english, im from Chile (also that's why windows is in Spanish haha), thanks a lot

    Still having some problems with the receiver. I've passed the Update Drivers-situation on the first page but my receiver doesn't seem to connect with my controller. What should I do? First both the controlelr and the receiver has a green flashing light but when they don't connect the receiver gets a consistant green light. Please help!

    Hey, this worked (thought I had to download the ''Windows Common Controller for Windows Classic'' first, only issue is the cam won't stop spinning on some games.

    I had this problem with Sonic Adventure DX and my unofficial wired xbox controller, but the XBCD+ driver fixed that.

    How do I solve this one from the spinning camera madness?
