Wireless Xbox 360 Controller Receiver For Windows Not Detecting/Working

I purchased the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Receiver For Windows and it is not working. I am running Windows 7 64-bit on a Sony Vaio VGN-NW225F laptop. I navigated to the correct place on Microsoft's website and downloaded the appropriate Windows 7 64-bit software for my receiver. It was an exe file and it installed correctly, or at least it said it did. This leads me to believe it is software and not an actual driver, because when I plug my receiver in, it lights up but comes up as "Installing device driver software..." then it says "Installation failed..." and registers the device as an unknown device.

I still press the button to sync it, and then I press the sync button on my controller, my controller recognizes the receiver and connects to it (both devices stop trying to sync) but as the receiver is not recognized by my computer, it is not communicating that a controller is connected.

This is frustrating because there is no documentation for honest support. Going to the support page it lists several things "Windows, Hardware, Audio" etc, but under NONE of these categories is this product, leading me to believe Microsoft simply doesn't give a ____ about me or my problem. Then when I go to support and try and type in my PID (product identification number) it says there is a problem with the number.

i had the exact same problem, i even bought a new controller to no avail. i eventually found the solutionon another forum and now even my old controllers work. after two weeks of searching i can finally breath a sigh of relief.

Right click on Computer

Go to Properties

Click on Device Manager

Right click on the Unidentified Device

Go to Properties

Go to the Drive tab

Click on Update Driver…

Browse my computer for driver software

Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Windows Common Controller for Window Class

Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]

Update Driver Warning

Click Yes

    I have logged in to say sooooooooooooooo many thanks to you. After 2-3 days of struggles I could make my controller working. Else If would have been a total waste of money n my time.

    just thought I would post this fixed my issue on vista 64-bit.  Microsoft was of no help.  As on person noted, i too couldnt fine windows common controller...... On my system is was under Microsoft common controller for windows.  After I tried it, the first time I got the error code 10, I tried a different usb port with more power and it went right up.

    i am doing this, but once i get to "let me pick form a list of device drivers on my computer" there is no windows common controller for windows class, it ends with Windows SlideShow. any ideas? i really want to get this receiver connected to my controller, thanks
