HI Peter, Mariljns solution worked for me however, in reading your message, a question, did you run the BAT file in the elevated Administrator Mode ? right click bottom right corner of W8, select Command Prompt -Administrator ? But above all, make sure it is a BAT and not a TXT file.

Hi JDMauldin, If you saved the file as WindowsUpdate.BAT, double-click on the file. It will act as an executable and make the changes to your system according to the commands. Let us know if that helps. thanks JD, windows 7 32bit home edition . following installation of the windows 8 upgrade, (i call it the W8 virus), i replaced my HDD and re-installed the old W7 a few days ago Since then, amongst other problems, i needed to install .NET framework 4.0 so I could re-install programs that need to use it. Needless to say, the .NET 4.0 would not install, so i checked my updates, which are set to daily automatic (recommended). As NOT expected, there have been no updates and the update service is not running and re-started the computer as advised by the pop-up a dozen times... no luck... i tried it manually, automatically, different variations of the settings but the only result i got was error code 824A000 looking at all the advice on here, i followed Marylin's instructions. the "cryptsvc" refused to stop running but everything else went according to plan executing the BAT file was not in the instructions, none the less, i saw your post and ran it. needless to say, it also did not work the answer is still "windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer" as expected, restarting the computer yet again did not change anything... :-( i'll keep reading on, in hope that the team has an actual answer for this issue...

General Windows Update Troubleshooting

The following outlines how to stop services pertaining to Windows Update, rename system folders, register related DLL files, and then restart the previously mentioned services. This troubleshooting generally applies to all Windows Update related issues.

Stopping services pertaining to Windows Update

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

2. If you receive a notification from User Account Control simply click Continue.

3. At the command prompt, type the following, commands and then press ENTER after each command.

net stop wuauserv net stop bits

net stop cryptsvc

4. Please do not close the Command Prompt window.

Renaming folders pertaining to Windows Update

1. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press Enter after each command:
