Multiple simultaneous audio outputs in windows 7

I have seen multiple questions about enabling multiple audio outputs simultaneously in windows vista and 7, like example SPDIF and analog output, everytime answer is that its not supported by windows 7. Why is that? Why isnt it supported it worked fine in XP, could you guys give some details why isnt it supported anymore?

Actually I have a very simple easy solution. It is very possible to have multiple audio outputs in win7. Well at least for this persons issue. I am the same way, I want to watch movies on my tv through the pc via hdmi but dont want to hear the sound of stuff on the pc through the tv speakers or vice versa.  So here is the simple solution.

If you use windows media player for watching the video its very easy.

  1. open windows media player
  2. right click, click tools, then options
  3. click devices tab
  4. click speakers, then properties
  5. select audio device (select HDMI output)
  6. click ok, then ok again.

All sounds through windows media player will now be played through the hdmi output and all other sounds from vlc media player, youtube, etc. will continue to play through the pc speakers.

It took me about 2 weeks to find that out. But it works.

    This almost works for me, but what I don't understand is how to chose the set of speekers being forwarded to the new device (if that's even possible) I have a headset and TV which should always play the sounds, and a monitor with speakers I'd like to toggle on and off. With this method I can only seem to get one device to listen to the monitor.

    Even if I could get the TV to listen to the headset (or vice verse) I would be happy.

    This is exactly why I use Linux. Windows is not only failing to provide the most basic of features, but it is actively crippling the computing world. Linux can make games run on computers with high graphics settings where the game is unplayable under windows, and I am willing to bet my life that there is money somewhere in there. And not only that, but Linux is free! Its just sick how much potential the home computer has that Windows is extinguishing. The day that Microsoft dies will be a very happy day for everyone who uses a computer.

    The likes of Microsoft who screw up the entire industry just for some money are the scum of the earth in my opinion. Oh and "Windows server edition", what a joke. No self repecting server admin who is actually educated in how a server works will pay a premium so that he can have inferior software running on his server.
