Event log shows event 11 atapi: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort1

Intermittent hangs. Event log shows event 11 atapi: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort1. How do I find this device? Is this probably a hardware problem?

I am investigating intermittent hangs, where my cursor becomes an hourglass and the system will not even respond to ctrl-alt-del.  In the event log, I find

Event 11 atapi : The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort1.

How do i determine which physical device(s) this is associated with?  Does this indicate a hardware problem, or might driver or firmware be the source? The system has been running fine for a couple years.  I am not aware of any software changes that have occurred recently, though I did have to forcibly remove and reinstall iTunes a little while ago.

I have run SMART checks on all drives and run some diagnostics.  I ran chkdsk on the one that I thought was the culprit, but no errors.

Just in case it was a memory-related hang, I tried to use the microsoft memory diagnostic on floppy, but it wouldn't write to the floppy (even though I could format it and copy files freely).

Hi

Go into your setup and look at what drive is adressed at each port; 1,2,3,4....

Then go to Device Manager and look how many SATA controller you have and how many ports for each, then start count from 0 for IdePort0, 1, 2, etc. for each SATA controller, so if you got 4 ports for each SATA controler, here it is how you got to count:

drive 1 - IdePort0, drive 2 - IdePort1, drive 3 - IdePort2 and drive 4 - IdePort3 in sequence

I hope it helps

    Maybe this information can help:

Computer Management -> Disk Management -> Right click on "Disk0" (Disk1, Disk2 etc) -> Properties -> Details -> Property = Physical Device Object name

\Device\Ide\IdeDeviceP2T0L0-7 - this is my first HDD (Disk0)

    "IdeDeviceP2" - maybe is "\Device\Ide\IdePort2"

I have 2 IDE DVD-ROM and 5 SATA HDD. DVD-ROM connect to PATA port and same P*, but  different T* in IdeDevice****.

All SATA disk have different P*.

But if one HDD1 junk to folder on HDD2 and have errors, in error message  show port for HDD2 !!! Add drive letter to all HDD (maybe not all partitions) and EventViewer show correct "IdePort"

As I'm using a laptop, I haven't physically disconnected any of my devices.

As for the hangs.... what I do is when something hangs, like my browser, I just wait and it will come out of it within a minute. Very rarely do I get to a point where Ctrl-Alt-Del won't respond.

They tend to happen more after a restart or soon after starting up firefox, so a lot of the time I just put my laptop to sleep.

Not sure if this will help, but in Administrative Tools->Computer Management and on the left side Reliability and Performance->Monitoring Tools->Reliability Monitor has some info. Maybe useful, maybe not.

Also - I don't think your CPU works as efficiently with DMA off?

It looks like the system hangs are unrelated, though I cant be sure.  I changed all the drives to turn off DMA.  I have even disabled and disconnected the devices.  The Event 11 hasnt happened in a while, but the hangs still occur.

    The hang happens like this:

    1. Outlook or browser app hangs, but i can switch to another app.
    2. As soon as I take action in the next app, the cursor turns to "hourglass" for all windows, including the Taskbar.  I assume this means that explorer.exe is hung.  It wont respond to Ctrl-Alt-Del.  I have to do a hard reset.

I appreciate any additional diagnostic ideas.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct\_memory\_access

Judging by the second paragraph, I'd say even though we can't do this: "On the Advanced Settings tab, click PIO Only in the Transfer Mode box"

because all our advanced settings tabs have is the ability to check or uncheck "Enable DMA" I assume that unchecking the box would in fact yield "PIO Only."

For some reason my ATA channels are as follows:

    ATA Channel 0

    ATA Channel 0

    ATA Channel 2

The bottom appears to be unused. The middle one is used by "device type" ATA disk. The top one is being used by "device type" "ATAPI Cdrom "

So I can only assume that it's my blu-ray drive that's been causing the error? Oh and Dell just happens to have a driver on their support site for every blu-ray drive except this Matshita BD-RE UJ225S. Instead of disabling it, I'm going to try disabling DMA on my first ATA Channel 0 and see where that takes me.

Please someone correct me if any of what I'm deducing here makes no sense at all.

PS: Also from wikipedia - I guess that's why Bindu R suggested disabling your optical drive and not your hard drives.

"ATAPI devices include CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives, tape drives , and large-capacity floppy drives such as the Zip drive and SuperDisk drive ."
