Device manager is blank

I tried Microsofts suggestion of clicking on plug and play and making sure it was set on automatic but that didn't work.

Hello Estridge48,

Thank you for your post.  Try the following registry edit to resolve your issue:

  1. Go to "Start", "Run", and enter "regedt32"
  2. Maximize the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" window.
  3. Scroll down to "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum"
  4. With "Enum" selected click the "Security", "Permissions" menu.

Note: At this point you will probably notice there are no permissions on this key.

  1. Click "Add".
  2. Add the group "Everyone" and the user "SYSTEM".
  3. Select "Everyone" and check "Read" ONLY!
  4. Select "SYSTEM" and check "Full Control".
  5. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.
  6. On the Advanced window check "Reset permissions on all child objects..."
  7. Click "OK"
  8. On the warning window click "Yes"
  9. Close REGEDT32

Modifying REGISTRY settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of REGISTRY settings can be solved. Modifications of these settings are at your own risk.

    I'm having the same problem with Windows 7 Device Manager.  I get the message:

    "Navigation to the Web page is canceled."

    I've made sure that Plug and Play is running in the services.

    I tried to check the box for ""Reset permissions on all child objects"

    but when I click either Apply or OK, I get a message that

    "Unable to save permissions on Enum...  Access denied."

    I don't understand why I can't change the registry, because I'm signed as with Administrator Priveleges.

    Can you please help.  I've been struggling with this for several days.

    I dind't think Windows 7 should be so much work.

    Authorization on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root is enough!

    Set System = R/W access

    &

    Everyone only Read

    Just been reading your tip 'cos I have the same prob with device manager in Windows 7.Could you explain where to find "R/W access". I've been through the routines on this page and didn't come across it.

    Wish Microsoft would get their heads round this prob.It's stopping me getting a new scanner going and there are loads of folk with similar problem on the web.

    FOR THOSE WHO GETTING ACCESS DENIED YOU  NEED TO EXPAND THE ENUM TAB AND LOCATED THE ROOT AND RIGHT CLICK ON ROOT NOT ENUM.

    1. Go to "Start", "Run", and enter "regedt32"
    2. Maximize the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" window.
    3. Scroll down to "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\root"
    4. RIGHT CLICK ON ROOT down to PERMISSION

    note: if you already have everyone & system on the list.

    set everyone to [read] under allow, while check [full control] for  system .

    1. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.
    2. On the Advanced window check "Replace permissions on all child objects..." bottom box.
    3. Click "OK"
    4. On the warning window click "Yes"
    5. Close REGEDT32

    IF NOT FOLLOW STEP BELOW

    1. Click "Add".
    2. under the  "enter the boject names to select example TYPE "Everyone" . without quote

    NOTE: Repeat this step for the SYSTEM. add> "enter the boject names to select example TYPE "SYSTEM" . without quote

    1. Select "Everyone" and check "Read" ONLY!
    2. Select "SYSTEM" and check "Full Control".
    3. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.
    4. On the Advanced window check "replace permissions on all child objects..." bottom box
    5. Click "OK"
    6. On the warning window click "Yes"
    7. Close REGEDT32
