why do my Office 07 icons keep disappearing in windows 7?

This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder. Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.
Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

I just repaired Office and that fixed it for me. It occurred after rearranging my start menu.
OS: Win7 32bit
App: MS Office 2010 (14)

I have had this problem and noticed that there was an windows 7 update the previous night. I restored my computer to the previous day and the icons reappeared, but I do not want to restore every night. It seems to be something that happens during the update. It happens to the Office icons, itunes, corel but not to mozilla which I probably use the most, and not icons that I rarely use. This is most annoying
Mine was a bit different. Clean install on a bare drive of Win7 and Office 2007. Worked great for a few months. I had Outlook pinned to the taskbar but no shortcut on the desktop. Months later, I installed some random program (can't remember which one) and my Outlook icon went to a generic icon. This persisted for weeks. I reviewed this thread and tried the solution proposed by asordu of turning on the checkbox. This didn't work for me. I then put a shortcut on the desktop for Outlook and it showed up with the correct icon! I then went to unpin the icon from the taskbar so I could try putting the new shortcut on the taskbar. I right clicked on the generic icon and unpinned it. Immediately the regular Outlook icon appeared on the taskbar.
