why do my Office 07 icons keep disappearing in windows 7?

This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder. Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.
Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

That is, go into Folder and Search Options under the Organize Menu and select the view tab. Sorry about that.
try updating for Microsoft updates for Office 2007 , use System updates as well...install ..rreboot and then tell is the problem still persisting
I have also had this happen. I believe that when I scanned and found a virus in the "Windows\Installer" directory, I deleted all information in this directory. After that, is when I lost the icons for an Excel spreadsheet and a PDF file on my desktop and not the application shorcuts.
The icons in my start menu and everywhere else for the actual programs did not change. Only the file that is assigned to these two programs do not have the icons. If I right click and select "New", the list also does not show the correct icon for the office products. The other items in the list show their icons correctly.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, Office 2008 with all updates.
This did not ungrey the change icon button for the shortcuts that are not displaying correctly.
