why do my Office 07 icons keep disappearing in windows 7?

This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder. Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.
Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

I'm seeing this issue as well when I pin Office 2007 icons to the Start menu or Taskbar in Win7 RTM. A generic, plain icon outline box stays there and you can launch the program when you click it, but the actual icon for Outlook, PowerPoint, etc. does not persist after pinning, only the generic box. It seems this gets worse after a couple restarts. Any ideas anyone?
My access, excel, and powerpoint office icons show us as default / missing icons in the start menu. When I launch the application, it also shows up in the taskbar as a missing icon.
This is from a brand new install of Windows 7 with office 2007 right after.
I had the same issue. When I went to the Start button, none of the programs with the generic icon showed up in the Office selection. I used windows explorer to see the program file (excel.exe, winword.exe) and then right clcik the icon > "send to desk top.," delete the generic icon and re-pin to the task bar.
My installation is a 7 premium upgrade on a Vista Business.
I solved this problem by opening up explorer, selecting a library, going into Properties in the File Menu and selecting Use Check Boxes. I then came out and went to the desktop icons, selected Properties and then the Change Icon buttons were no longer greyed out and I was then able to select the icon. I then pinned that shortcut to the taskbar and everything has been fine since. Dont know if it will work for you but it worked for me.
