why do my Office 07 icons keep disappearing in windows 7?

This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder. Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.
Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

To whomever still has this problem 3 years later,
Unpin the icon in dispute from the task bar, go to wherever the exe file exists, on right click menu, pin it to the Start menu, now go to the Start menu and then pin it to the task bar. Innocent by association, haha.

There is a office tool "Microsoft Office Diagnostics" to repair this problem.
You can find it from Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools
