why do my Office 07 icons keep disappearing in windows 7?

This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder. Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.
Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

Give authorization for your own accont (if you can)
The answer from Gorlyn didn't help at all.
I tried it and my icons where still gone.
What did help was to run the Diagnostic Tool from the start menu -> all programs -> Microsoft Office -> Office help programs -> Diagnostic tool.
(I don't remember the full path, but it was something like that.)

Yes, as I mentioned on May 10, that's the correct procedure. I wasn't that specific though.
I'm not sure why people are overcomplicating it.
Office has built in tools which diagnose the issue. They sometimes fix it, or give a more specific error to resolve the issue, as well as report to Microsoft the issue as well (if you choose to let it).
