why do my Office 07 icons keep disappearing in windows 7?

This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder. Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.
Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

After some digging I have discovered that if you are running an international version of Office/Windows7 (Swedish in my case), the name of the "missing" folder is different. Search for one of the icon files, eg. "Wordicon.exe", in the c:\windows\installer directory to find the relevant folder.
In my case the relevant folder existed but the icons for the various Office programs in that folder were wrong. I copied the proper icon files from another computer and then followed the instructions in "Loawercs" post from Friday, June 04, 2010 above. Problem solved
Does not solve the problem.
Execute the below exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\ offdiag.exe
It should fix the problem.
