why do my Office 07 icons keep disappearing in windows 7?

This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder. Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.
Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

Thanks for the suggestion acutie, but I'm also unable to "repair" the installation. I click on "Change" and get an error as the setup launches. I'd be very thankful if someone could help me with this.
I have Office 2010 and I had this problem as well on my new Windows 7 laptop. Specifically, my Outlook icon has been the only one missing that I have noticed so far and it is only missing when I put it on the Desktop or Taskbar. To fix it, I simply opened the Control Panel, opened "Programs and Features", selected "Microsoft Office Professional 2010" in the list of programs, and clicked on "Change". Then a dialog box comes up and gives you different options. I selected "repair" and a few minutes later my icon appeared towards the end of the repair process. Worked like a charm and it seems to be a permanent fix. Hope this helps someone.
I understand that may fix the problem for Office 2007 users, but Office 2010 doesn't have the diagnostics tool...does anyone have any other suggestions?
