This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder.  Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.

Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

    Hi guys,

I had this problem and discovered with one of the MS techs that it is due to a corrupt IconCache.db file. Below are the steps I used to get this resolved.

First of all I grabbed the relevant folder C:\Windows\Installer{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} from a working machine and put it on another machine.

Second, I ran through the steps listed below

    1) Close all folder windows that are currently open.

    2) Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence.

    3) In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.

    4) Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.

    5) From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)

    6) Type CMD.EXE, and click OK

    7) In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:

    CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local DEL IconCache.db /a EXIT

    8) In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)

    9) Type EXPLORER.EXE, and click OK.

    Hope this helps.

I upgraded from Vista and so far all of my Office 2007 icons are still on the desktop.

    They are all there....

Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point, Publisher, Access, OneNote, Project, Visio, Groove, InfoPath.

    More information would be helpful.

Are they disappearing after a reboot?

Are these the actual Office shortcut icons?

Avast boot time virus scan has been run with no viruses found.  The icons dissappear from the desktop and from the start menu.
