b. Do you remember making any recent changes to your computer?

Back up the registry**http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry**

  1. Go to start and type regedit.exe.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
  3. You'll see an entry on the right called InitialKeyboardIndicators. The "usual" default value is 0. Double click on this entry and change the value to 2.
  4. Close registry editor.

Restart the computer. The issue should be fixed by now.

    6 years later and still unresolved.  Using PS/2 keyboard (Sorry Microsoft, I know you tried to kill that for me but I found a way around it).  Having this issue as of today.  Num Lock will randomly turn itself off, this is a personal computer only connected to the plain ol' internet.

    I took this one step further and searched all registry entries for InitialKeyboardIndicators. Some had a single digit (0 or 2) others had much longer numbers. For the single digits, I set it to "2". For the others I added 2 to the number present. For example, some of mine had "2147483648". I changed this to "2147483650" and it now seems to work. No more nonfunctional number pad!

    Using Windows 10 just upgraded from Windows 8.1. Problem didn't happen until after I upgraded. Reinstalled the same copy of MS Office 2010 I was using before as well. I had also set login to use a PIN instead of the account password, which made it very inconvenient to remember to turn on the NUM LOCK before I attempted entering the PIN.

    I am using Windows 10.  My keyboard is connected to the computer through a USB hub.

    Randomly while I am using the computer the numlock key would go off.  The rest of the keyboard functions normally.  This will happen many times during the work day.

    I have made the change to the registry, and that seems to have fixed the boot issue, but the issue I have now happens while I am using the computer.   I turn numlock on and five minutes later it is off.

    This never used to happen on Windows7 (about two months ago).

    I have same problem and was fine up to step 3.  My reg shows KeyboardLayout and there is no InitialKeyboardIndicators there.

    What now?
