Where in Windows 7 can I find the recent items menu that was on the main menu in Vista.

Right click the 'Taskbar', click 'Properties' > select the 'Start Menu' tab > click 'Customize' > in the dialog displayed, check off the appropriate menu link, 'Recent Items'

I am having problems with Microsoft WORD not populating the Recent files used from it's icon on the Task Bar. But... my excel works fine. I have Windows 7 and Microsoft Office Professional 2007.

I've right-clicked the Start Menu: Properties: Customize: and Selected that recent files should appear.

Plus, I have even dragged certain documents to the task bar icon that I want pinned in Word and they will not show up.

The behavior that you are describing can happen if the Virtual file that holds the data for a pinned programs Jump List becomes corrupted.

Copy the following path.

%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations

Open Windows Explorer, click in the Address Bar and press the backspace key to clear the address bar.

Right click in the address bar and select Paste. Press the Enter Key. This will open the Automatic Destinations folder.

Note: This folder is Super Hidden and this is the only way that you can access that folder.

Locate the following file in that folder: adecfb853d77462a.automaticDestinations-ms

Right click that file and select Delete.

Exit all running programs and restart the computer.

Use the Word 2007 taskbar icon to open a few random files. Exit Word.
Right click the Word taskbar icon and test the Jump List.

Let us know the results.

You are correct this places the recent items list as visible on the Start Menu. My problem is with Win 7, applications such as Excel. Excel has its own recent items list. My list does not update. How do you fix this?

Hi Ray

If you are using Excel 2007 or 2003, there are known issues with those versions updating the Jump List component in Windows 7. No fixes have been found yet.

I get the "Recent" fly-out for Word 2007 and Access 2007, but not for Excel 2007. I followed your steps and the Recent Items was not checked. I have now checked it. I also increased the number of Recent items to display from 10 to 12, and that part works for Word. Still no list of Recent for Excel. Any further tips?

I too have a problem with Excel 2010 (2007) files not appearing in Recent jump list.

Recent files appear for Word (.doc + .docx) PowerPoint (.ppt + .pptx) in the recent jump list. They can be pinned.

Recent files appear for Excel 2003 files (.xls) in the recent jump list. They can be pinned.

No Excel 2007/2010 .xlsx files appear in the recent jump list.

I am using Dell Inspiron 1545, Win 7 Professional, McAfee Security Center

What is preventing recent Excel 2010 files from appearing in start menu jump list?
