when ever i want to update the windows vista home premium,i press check for updates,amessage says the service is not running,you may need to restart your computer,i do so but nothing happens

  • Click on Start -> Run
  • and paste the command below and enter

%SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

Hi ghass75,

• When was the last time you were able to install updates?

• Do you have any security software installed on the computer?

Method 1

There is a possibility that some windows update components are corrupted.

 I would suggest that you reset windows update components to default and later try to install updates.

Refer the below Microsoft article and run the fix it tool available.

Method 2

Disable security software on the computer and check.

Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    I have had that red shield problem for some time now and it has been a bugger to get rid of...but, vicotory is mine!!

    I went to the microsoft site here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

    referencing the error code that I always get when I tried to update windows...I ran the microsoft FixIt program and it fixed the problem!

    Click on the RunNow green button and follow the prompts...easy peezy! I was then able to get 51 missed security updates...woo hoo!!

    Having same issue here; haven't been able to update XP or Microsoft Security Essentials since 13Jan when I received and removed "XP Home Security 2011" malware.  Did the copy/paste that you suggested, no fix.  Still click on Express and get "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view."  Other apps (Java, Adobe, etc) update without prblm.

    Have reported this issue to Microsoft, but the responding tech appears clueless.

    All malware scans, in both Safe and Standard modes, come up clean.  Registry doesn't Appear to have any remaining links.  Windows Update reports that it's up and active, goes to the MS website, then fails with same msg when click on Express or Manual.
