when ever i want to update the windows vista home premium,i press check for updates,amessage says the service is not running,you may need to restart your computer,i do so but nothing happens

  • and paste the command below and enter

Hi ghass75,

• When was the last time you were able to install updates?

• Do you have any security software installed on the computer?

Method 1

There is a possibility that some windows update components are corrupted.

 I would suggest that you reset windows update components to default and later try to install updates.

Refer the below Microsoft article and run the fix it tool available.

Method 2

Disable security software on the computer and check.

Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    My system has been sluggish for months, I run XP SP3 with AVGfree, Adaware, and Spybot.  I gave up on McAfee and Norton a long time ago...[Microsoft Security Essentials] failed to install...

    Is Spybot Resident Tea Timer and/or Ad-Aware Ad-Watch enabled and if so, do you fully-understand what they do & how they do it?

    Norton and McAfee applications are notorious for not uninstalling (or upgrading) cleanly. Did you (a) uninstall the Norton/McAfee applications AND THEN (b) download/run the Norton Removal Tool [1]  and/or the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool [2] & reboot (c) BEFORE you installed AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials or any other anti-virus application or security suite?

    Thanks for the reply.  Actually my reference to Norton and McAfee were from previous MS Windows installations/platforms, NOT MY CURRENT ONE.  I understand though your suggestions about uninstalling them cleanly.  Been there/done that.

    My issue with Microsoft has to do with the fact that it is not straightforward to find fixes when people find backdoors into our computers and mess them up.'

    We shouldn't have to be tecnical geniuses to keep our systems running and/or have a battery of experts in our closets (my office is in my home).  And we shouldn't have to do Registry Edits, especially when we have no idea what we are doing, or the potential consequences.

    I'm not uninitiated to computers having cut my teeth on Fortran IV, COBOL, and other RJE systems with punch cards on IBM 360 banks.  Even spent time running HASP Tape Library sorts.  Ironically, in 1979, I built an Apple computer from scratch and installed "huge" Saturn 32k RAM boards in it so I could run CP/M and Worstar/.Lotus 123.  Had to learn RS-232 to install a Xerox Diablo 32 CPS Daisywheel printer (that was fun)  Then the Mac came out and all my files were incompatible.  I swore I'd never go back to Apple after that.

    Today I wonder if I should go back to the Apple platform.  My son in college swears by his after having given up with the Toshiba Laptop Windows platform I gave him and bought the Apple with his own earned money.  He doesn't have to spend hours/days/weeks looking for fixes and ending up finding them from strangers rather than Microsoft's own software technicians/FAQ sites.

    It used to be when you installed a new piece of software, YOU were the one who altered your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files so you always knew what the software was doing to your system.  Today YOU NEVER KNOW what the software is doing (or where it is coming from) to your system.  And you are at the mercy of this software and the conflicts that may exist among them (that is if it isn't malware, viruses, or other menancing pieces of hidden programs).  At some point you notice the system is crashing, or it is slowing down, or the screen refresh is wierd, or there are flashes on the screen, or little downloads occurring in a little window on the left corner of the screen (if you notice this at all).  Forget about all the cookies tracking your every move.

    I agree, I don't know what Spybot, Adaware, or AVG are doing to my system, and I know they are taking up a LOT of overhead, but they have helped me keep a lot of wolves at bay.  My point is it's sad I've had to install them at all.  Now I've added MSE to the list.

    Thanks to Susan, I can at least get all the KB Security Updates again.  Updates I didn't even realize had been missing due to some rogue software I didn't know I had.  Rogue software NONE of the security software could find or fix.  My guess is that my registry had been corrupted by the rogue software to keep me from getting the updates and to hack into my system.  But should I care HOW or WHY I had the problem or should I have to know how to fix it?  That's the essence of my beef with the big philanthropist and his company.

    GET THIS FIX WHERE PEOPLE CAN FIND IT.  IT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT JUST MY PROBLEM, A LOT OF OTHERS HAVE FALLEN TO THE SAME PREY.
