default gateway not available in windows 7

G'day,

While Windows 7 works and looks good, there is one major issue which threatens to derail the entire experience for me.

Several times a day, the default gateway becomes unavailable, which means that the PC running Windows 7 loses internet connectivity. At the same time, other PCs, running Vista, are continuing to work normally. This includes one PC with a WiFi connection and another which is normally wired.

The details of my network controllers (there are two) are as follows.

The problem is solved by manually having to repair the problem when Windows 7 finds that the default gateway is not avaialble and resets network controller 2.

I have seen that this is not an isolated  with several reports on the net, some suggesting that a different driver might help, but which one? Any suggestions?

It's one of many known nVidia issues with Windows 7 that nVidia must correct, unfortuniately Microsoft has nothing to do with it. I would sugguest that you contact nVidia for assistance.

    Hey ChrisLoz, 

    I've been following your threads for awhile as i've exactly the same Mobo as yours, asus p5k. Ive done all the things mentioned above with no success. 

    Could you confirm that your final 'fix' was to modify the Media Type in Advanced tab of network properties? I'm about to reinstall my windows 7 otherwise. it really is getting frustrating, especially when I'm doing alot of activities online (streaming, uploading etc).

    Hey Henz0,

    That wasn't what fixed it, because looking at the MediaType setting now it's set to Auto and I'm not experiencing the problem any more.

    Although, don't know if it's related but I'm having some issues with attaching files to Gmail, the internet disconnects when I try to attach documents and the error is "Default gateway not available". I found a workaround by changing the Attachments setting from Advanced to Basic.

    Try my suggestion of uninstalling it if you haven't already, that may be what fixed it for me.

    • Go to Start > Right click Computer, select Manage > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Right click and 'Uninstall' your network adapter > Restart your computer. Windows 7 should reinstall the driver from Windows Update, if not then manually install the latest version yourself.

    To keep this discussion up to today's date, June 23, 2010, I have been getting the same "default gateway not available" after upgrading from Vista 64 to Windows 7 64 two weeks ago. It happens everytime there are high download transfer rates from the internet, e.g. a streaming video. "Network->Troubleshoot problems" always resets the problem with the celebrated default gateway message. My PC:

    Nvidia NFP 3600 nForce network controller, driver version 1.0.1.211 which is up to date. Dual processor, 4 core.

    This is a big pain and Microsoft needs to fix it. For example, Microsoft Updates should update the bad software with working software and thereby eliminate the superstitious suggestions posted here which appear to only shift the problem around.

    With regard to it being NVIDIA's problem the time for Microsoft to be talking to NVIDIA is long overdue.
