While Windows 7 works and looks good, there is one major issue which threatens to derail the entire experience for me.
Several times a day, the default gateway becomes unavailable, which means that the PC running Windows 7 loses internet connectivity. At the same time, other PCs, running Vista, are continuing to work normally. This includes one PC with a WiFi connection and another which is normally wired.

The problem is solved by manually having to repair the problem when Windows 7 finds that the default gateway is not avaialble and resets network controller 2.
I have seen that this is not an isolated with several reports on the net, some suggesting that a different driver might help, but which one? Any suggestions?

It's one of many known nVidia issues with Windows 7 that nVidia must correct, unfortuniately Microsoft has nothing to do with it. I would sugguest that you contact nVidia for assistance.

Hello Guys. I found the solve on a Nvidia forum. Its works perfect for me.
This solution was found in another forum. And it solved the problem for me. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64. And the constant network disconnects was getting bad, especially during steady downloading.
What you need is the nVidia Vista v15.25 (32bit or 64bit) motherboard driver.

I ran into a problem immediately when the driver installer did not display the Ethernet menu item.
I had to do the following to get this fix to work. Note that it applies to the Win7 64bit version:
-- Reboot.
--the Windows 7 default ethernet drivers get installed in their place
--verify and note down the filename of the Network Adapter driver filename that Windows 7 uses.
--go to the location where the Nvidia installer unzipped the v15.25 files on your hardrive. Under the Ethernet folder, find the v15.25 Ethernet driver file "nvmfdx64.sys" (file version 1.0.1.6789) and rename it to the Windows 7 x64 default Ethernet driver filename "nvm62x64.sys".
--copy nvm62x64.sys to c:\windows\system32\drivers (archive the old default file first).
Reboot.

Can you provide a more detailed report of what you downloaded exactly rather than just the "'check what kind of controller you have'". As well as what "new drivers" you installed as well please. I am running an ASUS motherboard and an AMD CPU as well and would like to try to implement the same solution in which you found.

Wow, the Nvidia forums are being blown up with this also.
I'm having a very similar problem that has frustrated me to no end.
I've downloaded the latest and (supposed) greatest drivers for my Nvidia nForce 680i SLI motherboard. During installation, (I tried this with the older drivers as well) I am only allowed to install the "Nvidia Storage Device"... nothing else.
No ethernet port WHQL, just the storage driver, whatever that is. Nothing in my BIOS has any settings to disable or enable the on-board ethernet adapter. I've checked everywhere (that I know of).
Right now, my desktop has no internet access. When suggesting that it is Nvidia's fault, I'm inclined to disagree. Their drivers have the software, ready and willing to install it. Windows 7 seems to not be able to identify the device that the driver would be identifying.
I'd love a fix soon. I do like Windows 7, but without mah interwebz, I can get irritable. ;)
i also have an Intel(R) PRO/1000 PM Network Connection (integrated to Mobo)
I tried every "fix" and it doesn't help..
PLUS: Intel announce that they will not support and add new updates for my mobo anymore, Intel D945GNT.
I used their Update Check, and no drive are available for any drivers for Windows 7.
My question is: What if I buy a PCI NIC, like the Rosewill RC 400.which support Windows 7, will this permanently 100% fix the problem?
if Not: then this will be the last day I'm gonna read this forum, tired of this ____, then I will *upgarde * it back to XP.... YEAH... Since Vista,.. Xp is more like an Upgrade...
