default gateway not available in windows 7

G'day,

While Windows 7 works and looks good, there is one major issue which threatens to derail the entire experience for me.

Several times a day, the default gateway becomes unavailable, which means that the PC running Windows 7 loses internet connectivity. At the same time, other PCs, running Vista, are continuing to work normally. This includes one PC with a WiFi connection and another which is normally wired.

The details of my network controllers (there are two) are as follows.

The problem is solved by manually having to repair the problem when Windows 7 finds that the default gateway is not avaialble and resets network controller 2.

I have seen that this is not an isolated  with several reports on the net, some suggesting that a different driver might help, but which one? Any suggestions?

It's one of many known nVidia issues with Windows 7 that nVidia must correct, unfortuniately Microsoft has nothing to do with it. I would sugguest that you contact nVidia for assistance.

    I just loaded Windows 7 last night (finally had Vista 64 dialed and was hesitant to make the change....hehehe!) and ran into this internet issue and then spent hours researching to try and figure out the scoop and try different things to troubleshoot it. 

    I believe I have found a way to fix the issue!!!!  :)

    For me, it was resolved by......

    1.   Click on new little network icon in lower right corner of screen which will which will cause a little popup showing that you are/aren't currently connected to the web, but that doesn't matter.

    2.   Then click on "Open Network and Sharing Center" which should be in BLUE at the bottom of this little popup (there are many ways to get into this area, but I'm trying to make it as easy as possibly for non-techy types.  Another way is Control Panel/Device Manager/Network Adapters/etc..., but I digress!).

    3.   Once you have clicked on the Open Network and Sharing Center, it will open...you guessed it...the Network and Sharing Center!  Just above mid-screen on the right side next to where it says "Connections", you will see in BLUE "Local Area Connection"....click this.

    4.   Now at the bottom, click "Properties"

    5.   Now click "Configure" towards the top right of the screen.  (On my screen, I'm going to be configuring the NVidia nForce driver.)

    1.   Now click on the "Advanced" tab at the top and you should see a drop-down menu in the middle of the screen.

    7.   Drop this down to where it says "Speed/Duplex Settings" and click on that.  With that selected, you can now go to the drop down menu for the settings for "Speed/Duplex Settings" to the right and drop that menu down to "100 MB Full Duplex".

    ***8.  I also went to the "Power Management" tab at the top (to the right of the "Advanced" tab you clicked earlier.) and toggled off "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" as it seemed logical that I didn't want it to turn off this device ever to me.  I don't think this is necessary, but since it seems to be working now, why push it..hehehe!

    That's it!  Problem has not come back.   For me, it seemed to primarily happen if there was a lot of traffic (as in downloading a large file or two). 

    Hope this helps.  I know how frustrating it can be to not have your little computer buddy working properly, but I have yet to see software come out from anyone with zero flaws.  You always need minor tweaks.   You put out millions of products to work with 10x that many differing computer builds/setups and there are going to be "one off" issues.  Painful when WE are the one offs, but that's life.  

    No I don't work for Microsoft.   I'm just a realist.  ;)

    I have been following this thread and using the suggested fixes (ie; bonjour) without success, having the same problem whereby I lose my connection due to a default gateway problem.

    I do not have nvidia or bonjour and I lose my connection about once per hour. I purchased this machine native with Windows 7, so no upgrade paths or issues exist. Use it as it came out of the box.

    It's built in to the motherboard.
