G'day,
While Windows 7 works and looks good, there is one major issue which threatens to derail the entire experience for me.
Several times a day, the default gateway becomes unavailable, which means that the PC running Windows 7 loses internet connectivity. At the same time, other PCs, running Vista, are continuing to work normally. This includes one PC with a WiFi connection and another which is normally wired.

The problem is solved by manually having to repair the problem when Windows 7 finds that the default gateway is not avaialble and resets network controller 2.
I have seen that this is not an isolated with several reports on the net, some suggesting that a different driver might help, but which one? Any suggestions?

It's one of many known nVidia issues with Windows 7 that nVidia must correct, unfortuniately Microsoft has nothing to do with it. I would sugguest that you contact nVidia for assistance.

Here's a point of view I read once somewhere in a website. Drivers are provided by the manufacturers of the computer hardware. If a new OS is to be released, they will be the ones that would release the latest driver firmware upgrade (firmware, in short, is a program for the chipset controlling the hardware). Now, Microsoft is a big Software company, firmwares are not therefore released by them since it is a software. Working in a manufacturing company made me see that the firmware is tested even before the release of an OS. That means that manufacturers of the hardware get the OS when it is available, be it Release Candidates or Beta versions. Now, manufacturers would just have an ideal coverage on what will happen because their environment just "tries" to imitate a non-ideal environment where anything could happen. Now the resolution, if themanufacturers are still not releasing the updated driver, would be coming from the computer manufacturer or the manufacturers themselves. Microsoft would be the ones working with the programmers of the firmware (maybe the RnD department of the manufacturers) to give them what the sofware does and how it functions depending on the computer hardware being produced.
After hours of browsing it a shame that Microsoft blamed everyone else when they could have just give the simple advice below.
In the network adapter just disable the Task offload:

Ok...I think I have solved this. I was having this problem with my Lenovo T400s running Windows 7 [with 5100 AGN card] connecting to my Belkin N+ wireless router. I kept getting disco's everytime there was a change on the network [laptop restart, modem restart, etc] and would have to keep restarting. I had windows xp before and this didnt happen.
Now I cant say which step actually solved this issue but here's what I did, in this order:
1. Updated firmware on Belkin N+ router [the update facilty on the admin page showed that it didnt need updating but when I went to the Belkin website i found the latest firmware and it updated fine]
2. Updated my wireless card in laptop with latest drivers.
3. Updated the GigE network card with latest drivers.
4. [this is the step that I think made most difference but not entirely sure] I set my router and wireless card to 'bond' the wireless channels, so that instead of using just one channel [upto 144Mbits/s] it will use 2 channels for a combined throughput of upto 300Mbits/s. You can obviously only do this if you have both an 'n' spec router and an 'n' spec wireless card. google 'wireless channel bonding' for more info.
