Wireless Network Will Not Connect Automatically On Boot

I have Windows 7 Professional.  Every time I boot up I have to to click on wireless icon & enter code key to connect to net.  When I go to Network & Sharing Center, active network is showing.  When I go to Manage Wireless Networks, active network not listed.  When I try to manually add it, I fill in all data and click next, I get notice that access is denied. I have admin. rights. Have talked w/HP & router people to no avail.  Just need to find fix that will automatically connect to internet on boot without necessity of entering key code each time I boot up.  Would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

open search, type "services.msc" open services.

Scroll down to "wlan auto config" right click, stop the service.

Navigate to

"C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\ delete everything in this folder  leaving only a folder called "profiles" delete everything in the "profiles" folder except for a folder called "interfaces" delete everything in the "interfaces" folder)

Restart "wlan auto config" connect to your wireless network, enter

your passkey, (ensure the connect automaticly box is checked)

Restart your computer job done, your computer will now connect to your wireless network automaticly on boot.

Hi all, I followed the above advice and thank God you guys got it just right!!! The tip from Fikin to Smokey was right on!! He said to:

I saw this very frustrating issue on both my work and home WLAN. A colleague has helped me to identify the issue and the fix we used is posted below;

  1. Go to the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\Profiles (it's hidden folder so you'll have to manually type the path from the windows start bar),
  2. Give the local Administrators group full permissions;

 a) In windows explorer, right click within the folder and select properties

 b) Select the Security tab

 c) Click Edit

 d) Select the Administrators group (or if it's not there already, add it)

 e) Ensure all the permissions are ticked, with the exception of special permissions,

 f) Click OK then OK.

  1. Try adding a wireless profile again by going to Network and Sharing Centre - you should not now get the "Access Denied" message.

This worked Great!!! p.s,  I copied and pasted the folder location instead of typing it out. This fixed it, Thank God. It was just so frustrating. Thanks all, Ben.

    You have indirectly answered by question. 

    No, I am not on a domain.

    In order to connect to network, I have to enter my network security key.  Windows 7 should be able to store and remember the network security key.  It will not.  Therefore, it will not connect automatically on boot up.

    Also, the active network does not show in Manage wireless networks.  When I try to add it, I get "access denied" even when I am logged in as admin.  I need access.  How do I get it?

    Hi Smokey55     

    a. Is the computer on domain?

    b. Is the network password protected?

    Disable security software’s and check if the issue persists. Remember to enable it back after checking.

    If the issue still persists then, boot in to safe mode with networking and then try creating networking profile, under Manage wireless networks.

    To use a Safe mode with networking option, follow these steps:

    1.    Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.

    2.    Use the arrow keys to choose Safe mode with networking in Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.

     On the right side of the taskbar, you will see a wireless network icon like the one below. Click on it.

    A window with available network connections will open. As you can see from the screenshot below, the list is split by the type of available network connections. At the top you will have dial-up and virtual private network (VPN) connections, while at the bottom you will have a list with all the wireless network which Windows 7 has detected. To refresh the list of available networks, click on the button highlighted in the screenshot below.

    You can scroll down through the list of available networks. If you leave your mouse cursor over a network for a second, you will see more details about it. Windows 7 will show the following: network name, signal strength, the type of wireless security used (if any) and its Service Set identifier (SSID).

    Once you decided on which network to connect to, click on it. If you plan to use that network in the future, make sure you check the box that says 'Connect automatically'. This way, when you start your laptop next time, in the same area, it will automatically connect to this wireless network without requesting any manual intervention. Next, click on the Connect button.

    NOTE: be cautious with wireless networks which have no security enabled. They can be used to steal personal data. If you connect to such networks make sure your security solutions are turned on.

    After a few seconds, you will be asked to enter the security key. Ask the administrator of the network for the wireless security key or, if you are in your own home network, take it from the control panel of your router. If you are in a public place, it is best to check the 'Hide characters' box so that other people don't see what you are typing. Then type the security key and click on OK.

    If you typed an incorrect password, Windows 7 will request you to type it again and again until it matches the password of the network you are connecting to. If everything is OK, Windows 7 will connect to the network you selected using the given security key. When the connection is successful, the wireless icon from your taskbar changes as shown below.

    NOTE: this procedure works only if your wireless adapter is enabled. If it is not enabled, you won't see any wireless networks being available. The procedure of enabling the wireless adapter is different for each model of laptop. In one of our future articles we will publish a guide on how to troubleshoot problems with your network connections, so don't hesitate to come back.

    When I go into Manage wireless networks as user or as admin. and try to  manually add my active network, I enter all data, click next and get message "access denied". 

    Also, I have Key Code that I have to enter each time I want to connect.  Windows 7 will not connect on bootup without manually entering key code each time. 

    WLAN AutoConfig is set on automatic and Dependencies are enabled.  UAC is disabled.

    Had no problem with XP.  My Belkin router tech tried also and said it is a Windows problem.
