Low Battery Notification does not pop up when battery reaches critical level after upgrading to windows 7

I upgraded to windows 7 recently and the battery notification does not work when the battery reaches it's critical level. It worked fine with vista. Before when the battery reached 25% the icon in the notification area there was a visual reminder and when the level reached 5% a pop up would occur. Now with windows 7 I get nothing to remind me. I checked in the power options where I can edit my power plans and the battery notification read that it was turned on.

I was also having this problem of Windows 7 of just going into hibernate on low battery without notification.

I checked out the Microsoft site for Battery faq and how t change low battery notification which didn't tell me something I didn't already know. So I decided to experiment some. I discovered that when I changed my Critical Battery Action to "Shut Down" from "Hibernate", the Low Battery Notification popped up and could switch to a power source. I changed the Critical Battery Action back to "Hibernate" and the Low Battery Notification still pops up. I guess the system just needed a little push :)

My install is barely a week old so I guess the installation didn't make the correct settings. Having applied some changes to the settings has caused the system to behave correctly in this case.

I hope this will help others with this issue.

The icon might be hidden. Here's how to show the battery icon:

Right-click an empty area on the taskbar, and then click Properties.
Under Notification area, click Customize.
In Notification Area Icons, click Turn system icons on or off.
On the Turn system icons on or off page, under Behaviors, click On in the drop-down list next to Power, and then click OK.

Thank you for sharing this. I was having this same problem -- Dell Inspiron Win 7 -- and I tried your solution and, for whatever reason, it worked!

The problem began after my battery got a bit old and I pushed up the thresholds on the notifications.

I guess your solution is an unofficial "last step" in that process in order to get things working the way they should.

I have been working on this for over a year. My laptop crashes within minutes of being on battery because I need a new battery, if by accident it is running on battery it just crashes.. None of the advice worked, First no one expained how to get to the battery settings....type in "power options" under the start search menu (or find this on control panel) then select "choose when the computer sleeps" then at bottom select "change advanced power settings" Scroll to the bottom of popup window and click "battery" What a palava to get here, why it does not come up under the search "change battery settings" is ridiculous.

Anyway....next change low battery level to 100%. Make sure low battery notification is turned on..duhhh! Change low battery action to "shutdown" at least this stops the crashing and the notification popup now gives me a flying chance of scrabbling to find out why its accidently become unplugged. Good luck and hope this helps you!

On all previous Window versions the notification came up automatically. I think Microsoft should make it easy to choose to have a large popup whenever laptop is on battery, because frankly no one sees that tiny icon on the taskbar.
