Unable to remove Homegroup Icon

The HOMEGROUP Icon suddenly appeared on my desktop. I can't move it. I don't want it there. Can I get rid of the icon without disturbing the HOMEGROUP file?

You may follow the link given below and follow the suggestion by ‘Dale’ to remove the folder from the registry.

  1. Press Win + R to open a run box.
  2. Type: regedit and hint Enter.
  3. Navigate to:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\

  1. Find a folder (key) with the name {B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93} , this is the registry entry Homegroup icon. Delete the folder from the registry.
  2. Press F5 to refresh the desktop and see if the icon disappears.

    Had to do this again as the icon showed up. I got an error message but afterwards and using f5 to refresh it removed the icon. Make sure to tell people that even if you get an error, it should work. People may or may not get the error I did.

    The error was something about cant delete key while so and so is in use. Sorry it happened so fast and I was trying to type a message to someone when it popped up.

    I've found this is only a temporary fix.  The Homegroup icon reappears at random and the steps must be repeated every time.  To permanently fix the problem, I recommend trying Amrita's reply, found above.
