Just in the last couple of days, my mouse - a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 that I've owned for about a year and have until now been very happy with - has developed some strange, intermittent problems. Every so often, for no obvious reason, pointer movement becomes slow and jerky and it starts ignoring the majority of my clicks - I typically have to click the button three or four times to get it to register even a single-click. The one thing that works pretty much as expected at such times is the scroll wheel.
The problem is intermittent and unpredictable. One moment it will be as smooth as I could ask, the next it's an exercise in frustration to do the simplest tasks, then eventually the problem vanishes, as suddenly and mysteriously as it appeared. I'd say this happens about once an hour, maybe a little less, for anywhere from about 3 to about 20 minutes at a time.
I changed the batteries, then (several hours later) installed the software from Microsoft's site rather than just using the driver that comes with Win7 (the latter advice was from a similar thread from this site). Neither has helped; the problem still comes and goes as it pleases, not noticeably more or less often than before. At times when this happens, the wireless signal is (according to the aforementioned software) very good, and CPU activity is usually not particularly high, so neither of those things is the problem either.
Any ideas?

If I may please ask, are you referring to a Microsoft Bluetooth 5000 mouse, or aMicrosoft Wireless Bluetrack 5000 mouse?
My wife has the Wireless Desktop 3000 set, consisting of the Wireless 3000 Keyboard and the Microsoft 5000 mouse with BlueTrack Technology. The mouse has been giving her nothing but grief.

In my case, I have a years-old mouse: MS Wireless Laser Mouse 5000.
It has worked perfectly for me for at least ten years.
The only problem I had was my fault: I used rechargeable batteries in it, and I found that those make the mouse jumpy.
If I use at least one alkaline battery with a rechargeable, all is fine.
Thanks for your comments Rick. In my wifes case, the Mouse is just shy of one year. Your Laser Mouse will not have the Bluetrack Technology, suposedly advanced laser, and this appears not to be what it is reported to be. I suspect this is the issue, as I see it is not offered on the Microsoft site any longer.
For what it's worth, I have a 5000 mouse as well. It had no problems for a couple of years (and I was using slow discharge rechargeables). A week ago, I decided to put alkalines in instead. From that point on I got this intermittent issue as well. For some reason lifting the mouse off the pad for 10 seconds helped temporarily on each occasion, but within a half an hour or so the problem would return. Earlier this morning I tried the one battery trick and that seems to have cured it.
Interesting info! I never tried rechargables in it. The issue would still appear once in a while even with one battery, so in the end I ended up ditching all of them and, hate to say it, bought Logitech M510s for desktops and M310s for laptops and they are always always flawless. Microsoft does make several things really good (such as Surface Pro) but I'm done with their wireless mice.
