MS Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 periodically becomes slow, jerky and unreliable

Just in the last couple of days, my mouse - a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 that I've owned for about a year and have until now been very happy with - has developed some strange, intermittent problems. Every so often, for no obvious reason, pointer movement becomes slow and jerky and it starts ignoring the majority of my clicks - I typically have to click the button three or four times to get it to register even a single-click. The one thing that works pretty much as expected at such times is the scroll wheel.

The problem is intermittent and unpredictable. One moment it will be as smooth as I could ask, the next it's an exercise in frustration to do the simplest tasks, then eventually the problem vanishes, as suddenly and mysteriously as it appeared. I'd say this happens about once an hour, maybe a little less, for anywhere from about 3 to about 20 minutes at a time.

I changed the batteries, then (several hours later) installed the software from Microsoft's site rather than just using the driver that comes with Win7 (the latter advice was from a similar thread from this site). Neither has helped; the problem still comes and goes as it pleases, not noticeably more or less often than before. At times when this happens, the wireless signal is (according to the aforementioned software) very good, and CPU activity is usually not particularly high, so neither of those things is the problem either.

Any ideas?

    I had the same problem,, I worked on it for hours and hours.. finally I gave up and restored my PC to the time before I had un-installed the mouse in the first place.  That being said.  I had been all through my registry and control panel etc.. there was one service that was blown away when I did the un-install that came back when I did the system re-install.  If you go to your services.msc in the start menu, there should be a service called Bluetooth Support Service.  This is in addition to the Bluetooth Service.  The path to the executable is C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k bthsvcs  It's dependencies are Remote Procedure Call (RPC), DCOM Server Process Launcher and RPC Endpoint Mapper.

    Another thing you might try is to re-install your mouse drivers manually.  They are located at C:\windows\system32\drivers\mouclass.sys and mouhid.sys

    Hi,

    If the software checks do not help then call the 1-800 and they will ask a few questions and

    probably replace the mouse. Have you tried the mouse on other systems and other rodents

    on this system?

    Cursor issue could be part of the same problem and cause. My 5000 mouse allows the cursor

    to be a vertical line while I am typing, that is the default as I have not changed it. Of course

    the cursor is independent of the pointer.

    I am up to the checkdisk and clean boot part and so far, nothing has worked. It's slow going because I have to work for a couple of hours before I can be reasonably confident that the problem is or is not gone.

    By the way, on  totally unrelated note, do you know why my cursor keeps disappearing while on this site and what, if anything, can be done about it? I don't mean my mouse pointer (which has the opposite problem, it's supposed to vanish while I'm typing, but on this site it doesn't), I mean the cursor that marks the place I'm typing.

    @DominicP: I blew out the sensor hole with compressed air after I read your post. No noticeable difference. And even if that had fixed the jerky movement, how could it possibly have fixed the ignoring of my clicks? (BTW, there is no obvious way to open up the mouse and look inside.)

    Have you checked and removed any fluff or debris round the sensor hole in the base of the mouse, made sure none has entered the mouse body?

    Hi,

    Yes, if you just installed (not just downloaded) Intellipoint today it would be the latest version.

    Be sure it is set for your mouse and check its settings.

    All of that would have been nice to know on the front end however you can easily adjust the

    recommendations to the actual situation you have.

    When you removed TrendMicro did you run its Removal Tool. Avira is not known for causing

    this type issue however it certainly is within the realm of possiblities. Only way to know is to

    remove it at least for testing. Avast can be set to use less resources as indicated in the reply

    below.

    And of course it could be the mouse.
