MS Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 periodically becomes slow, jerky and unreliable

Just in the last couple of days, my mouse - a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 that I've owned for about a year and have until now been very happy with - has developed some strange, intermittent problems. Every so often, for no obvious reason, pointer movement becomes slow and jerky and it starts ignoring the majority of my clicks - I typically have to click the button three or four times to get it to register even a single-click. The one thing that works pretty much as expected at such times is the scroll wheel.

The problem is intermittent and unpredictable. One moment it will be as smooth as I could ask, the next it's an exercise in frustration to do the simplest tasks, then eventually the problem vanishes, as suddenly and mysteriously as it appeared. I'd say this happens about once an hour, maybe a little less, for anywhere from about 3 to about 20 minutes at a time.

I changed the batteries, then (several hours later) installed the software from Microsoft's site rather than just using the driver that comes with Win7 (the latter advice was from a similar thread from this site). Neither has helped; the problem still comes and goes as it pleases, not noticeably more or less often than before. At times when this happens, the wireless signal is (according to the aforementioned software) very good, and CPU activity is usually not particularly high, so neither of those things is the problem either.

Any ideas?

    Same problem here. Both my mouse and keyboard (more occasional) are real jerky/not responsive. It seems to have corresponded when I added a printer to my desktop. Neither keyboard or mouse is Bluetooth. Its with a usb

    My Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 is now nearly eleven years old, and it's working perfectly, even after I upgraded to Windows 10 from XP.

    I got the same problem recently. Using MS Windows 10 64bit Home on HP laptop. My mouse was MS wireless 1850. Behaved like a single clicking becomes double. Just moving cursor randomly created single clicking response. I tried to find the solution and couldn't resolve it. Just changed the mouse to Targus wireless one which I didn't like to use. But now it works better than MS 1850. I guess this happens after the latest windows update. I even couldn't rollback the mouse driver. SO PATHETIC - MS mouse doesn't work well with MS Windows !

    LOL! Sorry Lisa, that was just a reference to the standard stock answer you usually get from forum moderators who assume most of us know absolutely nothing. Case is point, I got a reply from a Microsoft rep saying the mouse was designed for two batteries and that I should make sure I've installed the latest Intellipoint software (one of the "blah blah blah"'s actually!), instead of reading my results and many who replied saying the single battyer thing works, and taking that suggestion to the design team and say "Hey guys, a forum reader posted this, maybe we need to look into it". Nope, instead I get Blah Blah Blah which is "Sir, make sure you have the latest Windows Updates and the latest drivers and Intellipoint software and be sure to reboot your machine" etc, etc, etc. Funny, this post was YEARS ago when tryinmg to GET updates to download was a chore... now Windows 10 hammers them into your PC and reboots it regardless of what you're doing, lol!

    Thanks for the idea about the battery.

    I'm not so up to date on what all other other "blah blah blah' is that I should do just to make sure I have covered all bases. If you have the time to let me know I would be very appreciative
